Shirley Horn has made a remarkably strong and consistent series of records for Verve. On May the Music Never End, her 12th record for Verve, there are two big changes: the absence of Horn's longtime musical partner bassist Charles Ables, who passed away in 2001, and the addition of a pianist to take the place of Horn's quite capable playing. Ed Howard fills in admirably on bass and George Mesterhazy does the same on piano, except for on two tracks ("Maybe September" and "This is All I Ask") where Ahmad Jamal takes over.

A superior ballad singer and a talented pianist, Shirley Horn put off potential success until finally becoming a major attraction while in her fifties. She studied piano from the age of four. After attending Howard University, Horn put together her first trio in 1954, and was encouraged in the early '60s by Miles Davis and Quincy Jones. She recorded three albums during 1963-1965 for Mercury and ABC/Paramount, but chose to stick around Washington, D.C., and raise a family instead of pursuing her career. In the early '80s, she began recording for SteepleChase, but Shirley Horn really had her breakthrough in 1987 when she started making records for Verve, an association that continued on records like 1998's I Remember Miles and 2001's You're My Thrill…

The release of re-mastered editions of the James Bond scores offered up some great albums that expanded the original soundtracks with extra cues ("Thunderball" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" are particularly superb). However, "Moonraker," one of the best scores of the series and one of the most lyrical and unusual (especially when you consider what a silly slapstick film it accompanies) arrived on CD in a bare-bones 30-minute edition that replicates the original LP version with no extra tracks.

A wonderfully groovy set – every bit as great as you might guess from the title and the cover – and the very first installment in the now-legendary Mood Mosaic series! The set's one of the few to bring together tunes from the groovier side of the spectrum at the end of the 60s – work from British, French, American, and German sources – all awash in a great blend of funky, easy, and pop-oriented modes! There's a nicely trippy feel throughout – and titles include "Hascisch Party" by George Garvarenz, "Kiss This" by Claude Denjean, "Acka Raga" by Shocking Blue, "Mas Que Nada" by Luiz Enriquez, "En Melody" by Serge Gainsbourg, "Love For Sale" by Marian McPartland, "Batucada" by Phil Crewe, "Marins Armins Amant Ou Maris" by Michel Legrand, and "Sitar Beat" by Klaus Doldinger. © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Call this Evans Lite, or the Vanillification of Bill. Following in the footsteps of the showcase treatments afforded Verve labelmates Joe Henderson and Shirley Horn, this collection culls some of the more reflective solo moments with the exception of "Turn Out the Stars" and "Angel-Face," which feature guitarist Jim Hall from post-bop pianist Evans' '60s catalog. The usual caveat regarding thematically skewed samplings applies here, i.e., without the hard swinging yang of a One for Helen to complement the yin of the more treacly fare, the uninitiated may come away from this nine-track compilation convinced that Evans is only a gifted purveyor of pleasant, if innocuous, dinner music. Strictly for the musical dilettante for whom time, and/or interest in the genre, is at a premium.

'Back from Middle Earth', The Hobbit's third & most rare psychedelic recording, appeared in 1969 on Hobbit-supremo Jimmy Curtiss' Perception label. 'Back From Middle Earth' is a solid '60s pop album which highlights the vocal talents of Curtiss & session-singer Gini Eastwood & is completely free of any reference to Curtiss' doo-wop past, as indeed are the three heavily psych-influenced 45s Curtiss produced (he also co-wrote two of the tracks) for Decca stable-mates The Bag in 1968.

2007 CD two-fer featuring a double dose of Delaney on one disc! Formerly of the much-loved duo Delaney & Bonnie, Something Is Coming was Delaney Bramlett's first solo album, released, in 1972 featuring Gloria Jones, the future Mrs. Marc Bolan, on backing vocals. Mobius Strip followed in 1973, a far stronger album that features the stand out track "Are You A Beatle Or A Rolling Stone'.
