Like many musical projects planned for 2020, the plans of the Ehnes Quartet to record Beethoven’s late quartets underwent a drastic revision. Rather than cancel the project, some ingenious technology was employed. James Ehnes takes up the story ‘Our quartet was greatly looking forward to a week of recording in the United Kingdom in August 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic made it impossible for us to travel to the UK, and for our UK-based producer, Simon Kiln, to travel to us. We were, however, able to take advantage of the wonders of modern technology by recording in the USA with Simon (producer Simon Kiln) monitoring the sessions in real time in London A fortunate benefit of not traveling overseas for these recordings was that the days we had scheduled for travel become additional recording days, allowing us to record all of Beethoven’s string quartets from Op. 74 onwards. The four CD’s we recorded during this intense two-week period will always be treasured reminders for us of a brief, bucolic window of artistic fulfilment during a terribly challenging period for the world’.

Franz Liszt, writing about Grieg's String Quartet No 1, declared: 'It is long time since I have encountered a new composition, especially a string quartet, which has intrigued me as greatly as this distinctive and admirable work by Grieg'. Grieg himself said that his quartet '… aims at breadth; to soar, and above all at a vigorous sound for the instruments for which it is written.' In 1891, Edvard Grieg started his second quartet, but sadly lacked inspiration and time to finish the last two movements. Levon Chilingirian of the Chilingirian Quartet has studied the original manuscripts of the first two movements (which have many clarifying instructions added by Julius Röntgen in preparation for their printing by C F Peters in 1908) and prepared the third and fourth movements especially for this recording. This is therefore a first recording of the completed String Quartet No 2.

A slightly curious compilation (two Russian performances dating from 1962, one English from 1976) but an attractive one, and very good value. I had not heard the Gabrieli's Tchaikovsky before, and liked it a great deal: properly chamber-scale, in colour as well as tone of voice, and nice underlining of the lyricism in even Tchaikovsky's most exuberant pages.

Tchaikovsky wrote little in the way of chamber music but left three masterpieces: the Piano Trio, Op.50, Sextet “Souvenir de Florence”, Op.70, both of them 'tombeaux' in memory of departed friends, and the third and final Quartet, in the strange, feverish key of E flat minor, of which Chopin was fond, in memory of violinist Ferdinand Laub (1832-1875). At the first performance, the Andante funebre e doloroso had reduced the audience to tears. The Párkányís, the resurrection of the Orlandos of 1976-84, again find a smile with a youthful Quartet Movement, in homage to the masters of the genre: Beethoven and Schubert.

Named after the Greek goddess of hunting and the wilderness, The Artemis Quartett was formed in 1989 in Lübeck, Germany. They are recognized for their chamber music repertoire, most notably Beethoven’s string quartets and are considered to be one of the foremost string quartets in the world. Originally founded by four students of chamber music at Lübeck Conservatory, they came to international prominence when they won first prize at the ARD Wettbewerb in 1996, followed by another first prize at the Premio Borciani six months later. They were invited to the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, where they were able to expand their musical studies. In 1999, the Artemis Quartett made their debut at the Berlin Philharmonie, which led to the ensemble performing at international festivals all over the world. As the years progressed, the members of the quartet would change, but their performances and recordings continued to enchant critics and music lovers alike. The Artemis Quartett has performed with a variety of artists including Sabine Meyer, Elisabeth Leonskaya, Juliane Banse and Jörg Widmann. The Artemis Quartett’s recorded output includes releases such as Mozart: Flötenquartette (1997), Wolf, Zemlinsky, Webern & Berg: Streichquartett (1997), Beethoven: String Quartets Op. 95 & 59/1 (2005), Verklärte Nacht (2006), and Shostakovich (2019). The quartet has received many awards and accolades over the years including winning the Echo Klassik, Gramophone Award and the Diapason d’or for some of their recorded works.

The Afflatus Quartet/Quintet has been in the music scene since 1995. Afflatus Quartet derives from Afflatus Quintet, the winner of the International Music Competition of the ARD Munich 1997 which is one of the most prestigious competitions of chamber music in the world. With Radek Baborák, the world-famous horn player and Afflatus member, taking "vacation" from the ensemble, the four members, each the splendid musician active in Europe, especially in Czech Republic, make the best possible unity with the woodwind quartet ensemble. Their second album features classical repertoire by Beethoven and Mozart. All of them are arrangements, but the distinguished ensemble members of Afflatus create sound rich and full of variety of colors, like an organic instrument made of four musicians, with celestial, beautiful sound for "Classical".

One of the great recent versions of - arguably - the towering string quartets of the 20th century is by frequent Buffalo visitors the Vermeer Quartet. Three decades separate the composition of the first Bartok Quartet from the sixth and last. Not only is the stylistic diversity within them often much exaggerated but so too are the difficulties presented by the third quartet, which, for all its dissonance, is so structurally cohesive (it's the shortest at 15 minutes - half the length of the first, fifth and sixth) that it remains one of the most powerful works in the quartet repertoire.
