The members of the Skye Consort share a love of many of the sonorities associated with the early music movement and found that a fusion of these sounds with the evocative melodies of folk repertoire produces a new and interesting sound, further deepened and characterized by adding bass instruments and percussion. Also, the use of a countertenor emphasizes the ethereal and melancholy qualities of the songs performed. The songs and instrumental pieces chosen for the album come mainly from the Celtic, English and Swedish traditions but also include arrangements of melodies written by members of Skye Consort in a style that complements the other selections.

Sea Songs didn't start out as music to be heard. They were songs to sing, songs to help with the work, songs to pass the time. These songs were spread by the oral tradition, resulting in many variations. Singers Nils Brown, Michiel Schrey, and Clayton Kennedy join Seán Dagher and La Nef in performing these songs with a new twist, while preserving their specific character and original appeal. Seán Dagher is an active performer, arranger, and composer of music from various classical and folk music traditions: Celtic, Baroque, Medieval, Arabic, Quebecois, and Maritime. He is artistic director and principal arranger of Skye Consort and is a member of La Nef's Artistic Committee.

L'un des plus grands chanteurs du XXe siècle, Alfred Deller a remis à l'honneur la tessiture de contre-ténor et ouvert la voie à une nouvelle génération d'interprètes de la musique ancienne. Né à Margate dans le Kent le 31 mai 1912, Alfred George Deller commence à chanter dans une chorale de la paroisse locale. Durant son adolescence, il découvre que son timbre de soprano n'a pas complètement mué et qu'il peut interpréter des airs pour alto. En l'absence de professeur pour l'exercer dans ce registre, il se documente sur l'histoire de la musique ancienne et apprend des airs oubliés.
