There's a moment on the third album by Soccer Mommy—aka Sophie Allison— when she sings, on "Still," "I don't know how to feel things small/ It's a tidal wave or nothing at all." And while she's certainly hinted at such extremes in the past (including on 2020's adult-alternative hit "Circle the Drain"), Sometimes, Forever shows just how low she can go. As always, though, it's done with an almost-ethereal beauty; producer Daniel Lopatin has said that the Roches' 1982 song "Losing True" was a vocal influence for the record. "I'd say that song is the birth of dream pop," he told Pitchfork. "And Sophie's record is the death of it!" Indeed, "Darkness Forever"—which feels as dark and moody as Medicine or the Cocteau Twins—opens with the line "head in the oven … simmering low."

Soccer Mommy has dropped an EP full of covers called Karaoke Night, featuring her unique take on songs by Taylor Swift, Pavement, Slowdive, and more. Along with Sophie Allison’s excellent reimaginings of Sheryl Crow’s “Soak Up the Sun” and Swift’s “I’m Only Me When I’m with You,” the five-track Karaoke Night includes her renditions of “Here” by Pavement, “Losing My Religion” by R.E.M., and “Dagger” by Slowdive. Nothing surprising here — if you’re at all familiar with Soccer Mommy’s catalog, you can hear how all five artists have influenced her music, from bubbly pop to scrappy indie rock.

Confronting the ongoing mental health and familial trials that have plagued Allison since pre-pubescence, color theory explores three central themes: blue, representing sadness and depression; yellow, symbolizing physical and emotional illness; and, finally, gray, representing darkness, emptiness and loss. Written mostly while on tour and recorded in Allison’s hometown of Nashville at Alex The Great, color theory was produced by Gabe Wax (who also produced Clean), mixed by Lars Stalfors (Mars Volta, HEALTH, St. Vincent), and features the live Soccer Mommy band on studio recording for the first time, with a live take at the foundation of almost every track. The resulting album is a masterpiece that paints an uncompromisingly honest self-portrait of an artist who, according to 100+ publications, already released one of the Best Albums of 2018 and the 2010s, and is about to release an early favorite of 2020.

A frustrated loss of control over life and a disconnect from the self reoccur throughout the record, only to circle back to a willingness to let go and be free, whether through love (shotgun, with u) or blissful ignorance (don’t ask me). Soccer Mommy is the home-recorded solo project of singer/songwriter Sophie Allison. The Nashville native started uploading her introspective guitar pop songs to music-sharing site Bandcamp as a high-school student in the mid-2010s. Combining updated versions of some of the Bandcamp material and newer unreleased songs, Soccer Mommy's Collection arrived on Fat Possum in the summer of 2017 while the songwriter was enrolled at New York University. Produced and mixed by Allison, it was recorded by Jacob Corenflos and followed by touring in support of acts such as the Drums and Jay Som.

The album is a big step up production wise, and its the most grown up Allison has sounded to date.
