Contains fewer crossover hits than previous volumes, but R&B scorchers like "Funky Music Sho' Nuff Turns Me On," by Yvonne Fair, and Bonnie Pointer's "Free My From My Freedom," will liven any party. High Energy's energetic "He's a Pretender" sounds like a smash, but failed to sell, the Mary Jane Girls' erotic "Candy Man" did much better. The only Pop hits are Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way," and "The Boss," by Diana Ross, but crankers by Tata Vega, Syreeta Wright, and the Supremes rate high on the groove meter. However, Milira's jazzy "Mercy Mercy Me" doesn't belong on a collection called Funkology: Dance Divas.
Over the last few years, just as jazz fans had thought that CD collections of their favorite iconic jazz musicians were “complete” (since the legendary artists had been deceased for decades), we have been treated to welcome releases from European sources of previously unreleased material. The latest bonanza comes from CAP (Consolidated Artists Productions), of never before heard recordings of Dizzy Gillespie’s Quintet from a two week engagement in August, 1973, at Ronnie Scott’s club in London. (CAP is owned by the quintet’s pianist, Mike Longo.)

Recorded between 1952 and 1960, the 12 tracks spotlight such legends as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, and Sonny Boy Williamson. Most of the numbers are classics, including Waters' "Hoochie Coochie Man," Wolf's "Smokestack Lightning," and Walter's "Juke." The inclusion of Lowell Fullson's perennial "Reconsider Baby," Chuck Berry's "Worried Life Blues," and Jimmy Witherspoon's "When the Lights Go Out" does come as a surprising but welcome addition to a basic overview such as this…
