Saxophonist Tony Malaby's Tamarindo, featuring the unerring bassist William Parker and explosive drummer Nasheet Waits explore the possibilities of the saxophone trio on Somos Agua with frequently staggering results—sort of like a very free version of the Sonny Rollins unit with Wilbur Ware and Elvin Jones that recorded A Night at the Village Vanguard some 57 years ago.

Known for a sound that takes Mexican folklore to the fields of electronics, Centavrvs is one of the most unique bands of the last decade. In their new album, four years after the essential Sombras de oro, they open up to an even greater spectrum of sounds and roots. In the songs of Somos uno there are cumbia, salsa, dreamy Brazilian melodies and rhythms of the old dance halls. From the runaway metals that propel the repentant romanticism of "Weakness" to the song of unity and the rebellion of "Quebrar las ventanas", Mexicans travel through an intoxicating jungle of organic sounds and electronic phyla that have a foot in the popular tradition and another in the future.

Somos Uno reprograms the endless groove of cumbia for a generation raised on genre-bending rock. While the compulsive rhythm of that classic sound provides the album with its foundation, synth-obsessed indie quartet Centavrvs also pour all sorts of unusual influences into these jittery jams and blissful ballads. They borrow punchy horns and psychedelic hooks from vintage Tropicália ("Debilidad"), revive the tropical sway of Balearic-era disco anthems ("El Punto Final"), and put a riotously Latin spin on the propulsive beat of '80s post-punk ("Quebrar las Ventanas").
