"There's an English adjective "laidback" which describes something that's very relaxing, peaceful & dreamy. When I first heard Miraceti's EP I though it's perfect for lying on one's back, ideally outdoors under the sky full of stars to just drift away, forgetting - at least momentarily - all the worries & problems of every day. First, beatless track sets the mood in: amazonian jungle, chirping birds, frogs…
Recorded in 1973 but only released the following year, "Desert Places" displays a wild mix of styles and influences, ranging from Jethro Tull (title track Desert Places) to Deep Purple, with a light sprinkling of krautrock "motorik". The musicianship however is never less than highly competent, making this record a highly prized prog rarity. Satin Whale's Desert Places was a fantastic heavy-prog effort, performing a mix of blues, hard rock and slight jazz, tempered by a stunning guitar, killer swirling organ and hard driven bass and drum. All the tracks are extremely energetic and well played. "Seasons of life and Remember" are the highlights of the album. HEAVY KRAUT PROG KILLER !! Fantastic Album !!
grown in the shade of the glacier. killer whale atmospheres is a future-memory affair of sub bass propulsive drones, rhythms, chords and dorsal scars building to a forbidding sense of cold echolocations yet to come through the violent procession of darkening rains.
First album by this rather late Krautrock band was undoubtedly their very best one. Actually the only point of criticism one could quote is the fact that it might have sounded already a bit dated in its year of release. Being much in the vein of early Tull, Iron Butterfly, Cream or The Doors the tracks presented here are a wonderful demonstration of this early Art Rock or Proto-Prog style. The title song is the one reminding the most to Tull with a soaring flute and heavy organ. It’s a very powerful and grooving one with a sort of psychedelic blues guitar play that’s bringing Cream back to mind. “Seasons Of Life” is even in a stronger psychedelic vein, kinda The Doors meet Cream or Iron Butterfly, very groovin’ stuff as well. This record doesn’t let your foot stand still only for one second. Though it might be not considered as that much progressive for the year of 1974 “Desert Places” was nevertheless a brilliant album in organ driven Art Rock typical for beginning seventies.
