I Am The Manic Whale are unashamedly a progressive rock band. The band is inspired by many of the great progressive artists, particularly Genesis, Big Big Train, Spock’s Beard and Neal Morse but hopefully is also able to bring something new to the table. Their songs are written about a range of unusual and interesting subjects, from the decay of a derelict swimming pool to the mobile artistic and engineering creations of Dutch artist Theo Jansen, which he calls Strandbeests.

When SATIN WHALE recorded their second output they have found more to an own discrete style on the one hand but unfortunately they've lost some the power from their debut as well. Thus with good reasons after that one and their Live record "Whalecome" they vanished in the haze more or less. The album starts a bit tame with the first three tracks but with the 11 minute + long "Go Ahead" comes certainly the best and most versatile track on here with great sax and flute play. "Trace Of Sadness" is a powerful organ driven rocker, "Song for Thesy" is very much dominated by flute, reminding a bit to FOCUS and has some nice drum and marimba sections between the vocal parts.

Label: Wind-Up | Tracks: 14 | Rls.date: 2013-06-25

2013 release from the singer/songwriter. For Jillette Johnson the journey has been as integral to her musical experience as the destination. Jillette, who began taking music lessons and penning songs as a child, has been performing live since she was 12, captivating audiences with her sultry, thoughtful piano-driven tunes. The musician, now 23, has spent the last decade cultivating her sound and defining her unique perspective. The album centers on Jillette's soaring vocals and the sparse, haunting piano lines she wrote to accompany them. Produced by Peter Zizzo (Vanessa Carlton, Avril Lavigne) and Michael Mangini (Joss Stone, David Byrne), the album reveals Jillette's pensive reflections on the world around her, all of which lead to a deeper understanding of self-identity.

"Feel the wrath of my Bombast!" exhorts Smith on this follow-up to their groundbreaking Wonderful and Frightening World of… the Fall, and this collection is ample proof of the pure confidence the group had at this time. Stompers like "Barmy," "What You Need," and the mighty "Gut of the Quantifier" are all led by Brix Smith's twanging lead hooks, filled by distorted guitars and bludgeoning drums, on top of which Smith rants with conviction. But it's the departures from this sound that mark the real interest here: The synth-driven "L.A." looks ahead to the Fall's experiments with electronica; "Paint Work" is an impressionist piece interrupted by Smith accidentally erasing over some of the track at home; and "I Am Damo Suzuki," a tribute to Can's lead singer, which borrows its arrangement from several of that group's songs. The Fall sound mysterious, down-to-earth, and hilarious all at the same time. The CD reissue adds the singles "Cruiser's Creek" and "Couldn't Get Ahead" as well as their B-sides making this an essential purchase.

To get the clichés out of the way first, the Fall are really literate, mumbling curmudgeon leader Mark E. Smith and anyone he chooses. Smith is famous for firing bandmembers, creating a slew of ex-Fall people who almost outnumber the amount of compilations released under the band's name, and most of those compilations are for "hardcore fans only." The final, and probably most accurate, cliché is that there is no Fall fan but a hardcore one, which brings up the question of who this amazing box set is made for. The Fall Box Set covers the band's whole career in five CDs, one featuring "live rarities" for "hardcore fans only" while the other four cover the band's career chronologically with singles, album tracks, and a handful of unreleased numbers.
