The saxophonist is backed by pianist Kenny Drew, bassist George Morrow and drummer Max Roach, with Earl Coleman appearing on vocals on two tracks. The Penguin Guide to Jazz gives the album four stars out of four and describes is as being "almost as good as Colossus, with the ferocious abstractions of 'B Swift' and 'B Quick' contrasting with the methodical, almost surgical destruction of "Sonny Boy".

"Night At The Village Vanguard" has been home to some of jazz’s finest performances. Rollins’ appearance at the legendary venue in 1957 proved he was one of post-bop’s most inventive and agile soloists. In peak form, Rollins enlisted two different bands for the historic shows. The afternoon show featured Donald Bailey on bass and Pete La Roca on drums, while the evening show featured bassist Wilbur Ware and drummer Elvin Jones. The ensemble dazzles with tunes including “A Night in Tunisia”, “Woody 'N You” and “I Can't Get Started”.

Sonny Rollins And The Big Brass (1958). Big Brass is an appropiate name for the large ensemble arranged and conducted by Ernie Wilkins that accompanies the huge sound of Sonny Rollins. The energy within the leader's gospel-flavored shout "Grand Street" is considerable, while a swinging but no less powerful version of George & Ira Gershwin's "Who Cares" features a choice solo by guitarist Rene Thomas. Also added to this compilation are trio recordings with bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Specs Wright, including a brilliant leisurely stroll through "Manhattan," along with Rollins' tour de force unaccompanied tenor sax on "Body and Soul"…
