George Frideric Handel's "Alcina", "Ariodante" and "Il pastor Fido" (The Faithful Shepherd) were cornerstone of Sir Thomas Beecham’s so-called ‘lollipops’ and are beautifully rendered here. These recordings represent some of Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields with Sir Neville Marriner's earliest, dating from 1970 and 1971.

Tansman was Polish but spent most of his life in Paris. He was invited to become a seventh member of Les Six but refused. (It would have had to become Les Sept.) He became a French citizen in 1938 but, as he was Jewish, he left Paris and spent the war years in Hollywood where he worked on films. He returned after the war. He was hugely prolific with several operas, nine symphonies, eight string quartets and many other works to his name. He is sometimes grouped with Szymanowski, Lutoslawski and Penderecki as one of the leading Polish composers of his time but, I think it is fair to say, is far less well known now. However, he has been increasingly recorded – you can, for example get all nine of his symphonies, and I have greatly enjoyed his quartets (Etcetera KTC 2017).

Sinfonia Finlandia - Gallois

Joseph Martin Kraus was an innovative 18th Century composer, acclaimed by Haydn as one of the only two geniuses he knew (Mozart was the other). Small wonder that intense interest has been ignited by his forward-looking music, especially the epic six act opera (a prologue and five acts) Aeneas in Carthage, a retelling of the famous story of Dido and Aeneas. Originally intended for the inauguration of the new opera house in Stockholm, the première was delayed for ten years until 1791 allowing Kraus to refine his titanic score into a true magnum opus.

Oscar winning composer Gabriel Yared is one of the most well-respected composers in film. Yared won an Academy Award for his score to Anthony Minghella’s The English Patient, which also won him a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and a Grammy. Yared was originally known for his work in French cinema, starting with Jean-Luc Godard and later Jean-Jacques Beineix (Betty Blue) and Jean-Jacques Annaud (The Lover). He also composed ballet music for works such as Clavigo for The Paris Opera and Wayne McGregor’s Raven Girl for The Royal Opera Ballet.“I hope that by listening to some of my film music and just closing your eyes, you can imagine and invent your own film. This is what music aims for, just any kind of music: to trigger the imagination and let you create your own images, your own world.” – Gabriel Yared

Two names virtually synonymous with the violin in the twentieth century are Fritz Kreisler and Oscar Shumsky. The former was a notable performer in his own right, appearing as soloist in front of most of the world's most prominent orchestras. Today, however, Kreisler primarily lives on through his extensive compositional output, particularly that for the violin. This vast body of work can generally be categorized as being nationalistic, imitative of eighteenth century composers, or arrangements.

From his time as a student at the Leningrad (today’s St Petersburg) Conservatory, Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) developed a strong connection with cinema, earning a living in the 1920s as a pianist for silent films. He would go on to write scores throughout his career for dozens of sound films, among them Aleksandr Faintsimmer’s The Gadfly (1955), beloved in the Soviet Union for its themes of revolution and atheism. The writing, with its highly diversified contours, combines in an extraordinary way severe accents and romantic outbursts of a purely Russian style with atmospheres of a Mediterranean character. Vadim Borisovsky’s viola and piano arrangement is based on the suite for orchestra prepared from Shostakovich’s score by Lev Atovmyan.

A great selection of classical music with good, pleasant sound. These discs are to be listened to and enjoyed; not analyzed and argued over. Just play one after the other for hours of famous pieces that take you chronologically from the Baroque through the Romantic period. It is an easy and economical way to listen to a fine general survey of great, timeless music. Plainly stated, a bargain.

This instalment – 1981 – is released on October 20th 2023.The 12” single was a dynamic and increasingly essential part of the release schedule as the decade progressed. Incorporating extended (sometimes full album) versions, remixes, and re-inventions – they not only gave the dancefloor a longer version, and the listener an alternative take, but also highlighted the artistry of the producer – bringing together all kinds of elements to create new soundscapes woven together with the original track, either vocal or instrumental, to present another reason to be excited on release date.
