The great Dutch conductor Bernard Haitink’s 90th birthday is celebrated by one of the world’s greatest orchestras, the Bavarian Radio Symphony—with whom he’s developed a close rapport down the years. This Portrait focuses on a handful of the great Austro-German classics and reveals Haitink’s authority, consistency, and inspired leadership. His Mahler (Symphonies Nos. 3, 4, and 9) is powerful and heartfelt, and his Bruckner (No. 5) is built with the experience of having performed this music for decades. In Beethoven’s Missa solemnis he conveys us to rare spiritual heights, and in Haydn’s two oratorios there’s charm, humor, and a very special and touching humanity.

A magnificent oratorio, long forgotten, has been rediscovered in Leipzig. Gregor Meyer conducts the Gewandhaus Chorus and the camerata lipsiensis in Friedrich Schneider’s Das Weltgericht. The composer, pianist, organist, and Anhalt-Dessau court music director Friedrich Schneider was one of the most creative and productive minds in the Central German music world during the first half of the nineteenth century but today is unfortunately a forgotten man. Das Weltgericht was once one of the most famous German oratorios, inspired euphoric headlines everywhere when it was first composed, and occasioned genuine storms of enthusiasm among concertgoers. The libretto is by August Apel, who based his text on the biblical accounts of the Last Judgment in Matthew 24-25 and the Revelation of John. A plot in the strict sense is not narrated; rather, the persons are biblical messengers who tell us of heaven, hell, and earth. This oratorio situated between classicism and romanticism was often performed but then was forgotten for many decades.

Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung) is one of the most remarkable achievements in all music, and Siegfried, the third in the cycle, contains some of the greatest moments in Wagner s entire output. Wagner conceived Siegfried as a heroic man of the future, and his fantastical tale is one in which the human dramas of treachery and violent struggles for power become magnified in a world of gods, dragons and magic. The previous opera in this cycle, Die Walkure, was acclaimed in The Guardian as thrillingly vivid… easily maintains the high standard and promise of Das Rheingold. (Naxos NBD0049).

Joseph Haydn’s oratorios Die Jahreszeiten and Die Schöpfung are closely intellectually connected with each other: whilst The Creation paints a picture of the world coming into existence, The Seasons is about its existence and the cyclical growth and decay of nature over the course of a year. With its powerful depictions of nature, this musical journey through the year is one of the most popular compositions by the Viennese classical composer. In many respects, Haydn’s late work The Seasons follows on from formal elements in The Creation, but he continues these in independent, innovative ways, and draws on the full range of compositional effects.

This is in short a really good recording. Gerdes' handling of the opera is very good (though his tempo in the Pilgrims' Chorus theme of the Overture is almost disturbingly fast), the orchestra is well controlled and very expressive. Birgit Nilsson, one of the greatest Wagnerian sopranos of the 20th Century, sings the two principle female roles - Venus and Elisabeth; Wolfgang Windgassen, who sings the role of Tannhauser, is one of the greatest Wagnerian tenors of the century. And Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who sings Wolfram, is virtually undisputed as THE baritone of the century.Highly recommend this recording.

Homilius is regarded as one of the most significant church composers during the transition between the baroque and classical eras.
