For his 14th album as a leader, he is joined by three rather impressive musicians. Organist Carey Frank has performed regularly with the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Eric Marienthal, Jane Monheit, Bob Mintzer, the Phat Cat Swingers and several groups of his own. Drummer Ben Scholz has been in groups with such notables as the late Roy Hargrove, Esperanza Spalding, Buddy Guy, Bill Watrous and Aaron Neville.

Stan Getz (born Stanley Gayetski; February 2, 1927 – June 6, 1991) was an American jazz saxophonist. Playing primarily the tenor saxophone, Getz was known as "The Sound" because of his warm, lyrical tone, his prime influence being the wispy, mellow timbre of his idol, Lester Young. Coming to prominence in the late 1940s with Woody Herman's big band, Getz is described by critic Scott Yanow as "one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists". Getz performed in bebop and cool jazz groups. Influenced by João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim, he popularized bossa nova in America with the hit single "The Girl from Ipanema" (1964).

Tenor saxophone legend Stan Getz’s career spanned six decades in which he played with everyone from Antonio Carlos Jobim and Dizzy Gillespie to Barry Manilow and Huey Lewis. On June 14, Verve Records and UMe will take fans back to the evening of November 26, 1961, when Getz and his quartet comprising pianist Steve Kuhn, bassist John Neves, and drummer Roy Haynes took the stage at New York’s Village Gate. The show was professionally recorded, possibly for release, but for one reason or another, was never issued.

One of the biggest-selling jazz albums of all time, not to mention bossa nova's finest moment, Getz/Gilberto trumped Jazz Samba by bringing two of bossa nova's greatest innovators guitarist/singer João Gilberto and composer/pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim to New York to record with Stan Getz. The results were magic. Ever since Jazz Samba, the jazz marketplace had been flooded with bossa nova albums, and the overexposure was beginning to make the music seem like a fad.

A fantastic live performance from Stan Getz – recorded in Paris at the end of the 50s, and with maybe a bit more of an edge than some of his other European concerts! One of the key factors here is the budding modernist Martial Solal on piano – who makes a nicely surprising partner for Stan – in a group that also features Jimmy Gourley on guitar, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – certainly something of a French pick-up group, but one that's top shelf all the way through! Stan's got a wonderful sharpness to his tone – with that growing sense of fullness that would mature in the 60s, but still also this link that maybe goes a bit back towards Lester Young too – spun out on long takes of familiar tunes, very well-recorded as on other selections in this series.

In contrast to most actor/actresses-turned-vocalists, there's nothing to joke about on this album - no Golden Throats candidates, except maybe the title track. For starters, Shepherd has a solid jazz ensemble backing her up, led by Stan Getz and arranged by Oscar Neves, and gives us a very enjoyable jazz-flavored record. She takes the Fred Astaire approach to singing, not denying that she has a limited range but working carefully within that range and even using those limitations to her advantage. Getz's solos perfectly complement Shepherd's voice, and she stretches out ravishingly on "This Masquerade," "I'm Old Fashioned" is a sexy torch number in her hands, without a trace of campiness, "Speak Low" soars subtly and elegantly, and the opening number, Ginastera's "Triste," is a sophisticated piece of concert music and a triumph for her as well.
