Stanislaw Lem, einer der profiliertesten polnischen Autoren nicht nur der Science-fiction-Literatur, hat seine Kindheitserinnerungen niedergeschrieben. In »Das hohe Schloß« entsteht das Lwów der zwanziger und dreißiger Jahre, „mit bewundernswerter Akkuratesse beschrieben”, wie Mario Szenessy in der »Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung« bemerkte: „Ich habe selten Beschreibungen von solch zwingender Eindringlichkeit gelesen, oder genauer: verschlungen, denn sie haben mich in Atem gehalten, sie sind spannender als der intelligenteste Kriminalroman.” Doch sieht Lem seine Heimatstadt nur scheinbar mit den Augen des Kindes und Jugendlichen.

Active for some years as a semi-professional jazz vibist, Lem Winchester, a police officer in Wilmington, Del., was largely unknown when jazz critic Leonard Feather first heard him in 1958 and brought him to the Newport Jazz festival that year. There, his stellar performance astounded audiences, musicians and critics alike. Issued as part of the album New Faces at Newport, it opened up for him the prospect of a career in jazz. Backed by Ramsey Lewiss well integrated trio, he made his first record as leader a few months later, working beautifully with Lewis on the tribute album to the late trumpeter, Clifford Brown, a boyhood friend of the vibist, included here.

Un domani che Lem preconizzava permeato dall'enorme sviluppo tecnologico, il cui impatto sull'umanità avrebbe mostrato e anticipato in queste pagine..

Prima che Stanislaw Lem scrivesse i suoi capolavori, l’immaginario fantascientifico era ostaggio dei propri deperibili eccessi, ossia di congegni mirabolanti, di abissi siderali sempre minacciosi, di astruserie pseudomatematiche: un armamentario godibile, ma spinto a rapida obsolescenza dall’innovazione tecnologica e dalla scienza vera, non fantasticata. Lem invece ha saputo costruire perfette macchine narrative che non invecchiano, consegnando la fantascienza alla grande letteratura.
