One of the greatest records ever recorded by pianist Stanley Cowell – one of the leading lights of the legendary Strata East label! Stanley's working here with a great cast of musicians that includes Ed Blackwell, Marion Brown, Bill Lee, and Nadi Quamar – in varying assemblages from track to track, creating a warm batch of spiritual grooves, topped off by the classic "Travelin' Man", a beautifully mellow number done with thumb piano and vocals, almost in a Heath Brothers Strata mode! Other tracks include "Lullabye", "Thank You My People", "Trying To Find A Way", and "The Gehmbhre" – and the whole album's very solid!

Playing at Maybeck Recital Hall before a small but attentive crowd seems to bring out the best in many pianists. Stanley Cowell performs a well-planned program of 14 selections on this 1990 CD. On a two-minute "Softly as in a Morning Sunrise," Cowell runs through all twelve keys. He pays tribute to the stride-piano tradition on "Stompin' at the Savoy," explores some bop, Latin-jazz (a transformed "Autumn Leaves") and post bop music, plays "Jitterbug Waltz" in the style of Art Tatum, inteprets "Stella by Starlight" in 5/4 time and performs J.J. Johnson's "Lament" with just his left hand. A very interesting recital. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

On 'Are You Real', which is the pianist and composer Stanley Cowell's thirteenth release on SteepleChase, he demonstrates that he's a supreme interpreter of jazz standards. During the last five decades Stanley Cowell has not only been active on the jazz scene but also devoted himself in the musical education of younger generation. Now his well-earned retirement from teaching at Rutgers enables him to spend more time in performing and recording.

During his time at college he played with jazz innovator Rahsaan Roland Kirk, which proved to be formative for the pianist. He moved to New York in the mid-1960s.

For a good part of his career, pianist Stanley Cowell has had greater exposure recording for labels in Europe and Japan than in his native United States. Prayer for Peace marks his first recording in over a decade, though it is immediately apparent that Cowell has not been playing in a vacuum but continuing to evolve. In addition to the seasoned rhythm section, consisting of bassist Mike Richmond and drummer Victor Lewis, the pianist features his daughter Sunny, who sings or plays viola on several tracks.

Juneteenth is a traditional festival of freedom for African Americans. The name comes from a date, June 19, 1865, the day blacks in Texas learned that slavery was abolished. Inspired by the upcoming 150th anniversary of the festival, American jazz pianist Stanley Cowell first created the suite for piano recorded here, and then went on to create a work on the same theme for orchestra, choir and electronics. Cowell, currently a professor at Rutgers, has worked with many jazz greats including Max Roach, Bobby Hutcherson, Clifford Jordan, Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz.

An hour-long solo piano set recorded in April 1993 at SteepleChase Records' Danish studio, Stanley Cowell's Angel Eyes shows off the educator and sideman's impeccable melodic sense in its purest setting. Although there's a cerebral quality to Cowell's playing, akin to cool piano pioneers like Lennie Tristano, Bill Evans, and Dave Brubeck (who performed one of the best-known versions of this set's title track), Cowell never loses sight of the song's melodic line, even when his playing veers off into abstract variations.
