Probably the best of all the many albums Longhair waxed during his comeback. A tremendously tight combo featuring three horns and Dr. John on guitar delightfully back the Professor every step of the way as he recasts Solomon Burke's "Cry to Me" and Fats Domino's "Whole Lotta Loving" in his own indelible image and roars, yodels, and whistles out wonderful remakes of his own oldies "Big Chief" and "Bald Head."

I can see why this album is so well sought after, absolutely great musicians and good songs. All fit together nicely, superb mixings and sound! Tayfun; sadly he was a cancer and he passed away '82, he was only 36 years old!

The Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet was founded in 1978 by Daniël Brüggen, Bertho Driever, Paul Leenhouts and Karel van Steenhoven who were students at the Sweelinck Conservatory Amsterdam at that time. The quartet has continually explored the boundaries of the recorder consort. Following its formation, the ensemble's reputation grew quickly and was further strengthened at the 1981 Musica Antiqua Competition in Bruges where, challenging the competition rules, it performed an unusual arrangement of a Stevie Wonder song and emerged as the winner.

After performing his second-to-last selection, "White Light/White Heat," a tune by Lou Reed, the songwriter who most influenced Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie's enduring and indelible persona, Bowie dropped this little nugget on his fans (and bandmates): "Not only is it the last show of the tour, but it's the last show that we'll ever do. Thank you." He then went into a magnificent version of "Rock & Roll Suicide," a song that gives a glimpse of where Bowie could have gone, not to suicide, but to the style of rock & roll that a long-term band can provide. Had Bowie kept the Spiders from Mars together, unique flashes like the version of "Let's Spend the Night Together" or the striking "All the Young Dudes would have continued, a tight little rock & roll band providing a balance that dissipated when the artist branched out on his own.

In the musical landscape of the sixteenth century there was little place for 'Dutch' composers in the strict sense of the word. […] Due to the favourable cultural and economic climate the region developed into a breeding ground for renaissance polyphony. […] On this CD, the step from the past to the present is a small one.

Any Grappelli album contains a wealth of material by the cream of the song-writers and this present LP is no exception; indeed it includes songs which the violinist has never recorded before, plus two of his outstanding originals. The session took place in a vast film studio, capable of housing almost a complete concert orchestra, yet the intimate atmosphere created by Grappelli and Alan Clare points to the dedication to the task at hand. Grappelli and Clare have worked together many times over an extended period.
