Released in July 2020, into a world that continued to be battered by heartache and confusion, Stardust awakens complex emotions. On the surface, Meredi’s solo piano music has instant appeal, born of her love of popular music, but these intricate miniatures contain hidden depths. The waltz “Annual Rings” mixes innocence and nostalgia while “Waldeinsamkeit,” a beautiful German word conjuring up the complexity of solitude, stirs the very feelings that many of us have experienced during 2020. The melancholy of “Circles in the Sky” is heightened by its pulsating ostinato, straight from the dance clubs of Berlin. “Song for Rosemarie” is a breathtaking, uplifting chorale that offers a beautiful moment of reflection before “A Final Breath” brings the album to an uncertain, open-ended rest.

Borrowing heavily from Marc Bolan's glam rock and the future shock of A Clockwork Orange, David Bowie reached back to the heavy rock of The Man Who Sold the World for The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Constructed as a loose concept album about an androgynous alien rock star named Ziggy Stardust, the story falls apart quickly, yet Bowie's fractured, paranoid lyrics are evocative of a decadent, decaying future, and the music echoes an apocalyptic, nuclear dread. Fleshing out the off-kilter metallic mix with fatter guitars, genuine pop songs, string sections, keyboards, and a cinematic flourish, Ziggy Stardust is a glitzy array of riffs, hooks, melodrama, and style and the logical culmination of glam.

Stardust From Tomorrow is a fairly typical late '80s live date for the Arkestra, as it gives a decent overview of what the band could do: a little Fletcher Henderson, a little Duke Ellington, some Ra originals, some space chants, and some conducted improvisation flowing seamlessly from one tune to the next. Both Michael Ray and Marshall Allen are in fine form on this date, with Allen shining especially bright on "Prelude to a Kiss." (He always tears it up on the Ellington numbers.) Unfortunately, due to ill health, John Gilmore is absent from this recording, gearing it more toward the completist/collector than the casual listener. Sound quality is good, but there are some problems associated with a live date: some minor swells of feedback on stage during "Blue Lou" and some slightly off-mike moments. The performance, though, is a fine one. Sun Ra releases on Leo Records have always been more about documentation than audiophile sound anyway.

Stardust is another satisfying record from Ron Carter, this one in part a tribute to the late Oscar Pettiford. Leading a quintet with Benny Golson on tenor, Joe Locke on vibes, Sir Roland Hanna on piano, and Lenny White on drums, Carter picks three choice tunes by Pettiford – the swing-to-tango "Tamalpais," the minor-key bop classic "Bohemia After Dark," and the masterfully simple "Blues in the Closet."
