A group whose distinctly ethereal and gossamer sound virtually defined the enigmatic image of the record label 4AD, Cocteau Twins were founded in Grangemouth, Scotland, in 1979. Taking their name from an obscure song from fellow Scots Simple Minds, the Cocteaus were originally formed by guitarist Robin Guthrie and bassist Will Heggie and later rounded out by Guthrie's girlfriend Elizabeth Fraser, an utterly unique performer whose swooping, operatic vocals relied less on any recognizable language than on the subjective sounds and textures of verbalized emotions.

During the latter half of the 1980s, a wave of alternative artists began to explore a gentler, more ethereal sound, bringing a dream-like aesthetic to the rock and pop idiom. Taking its lead from the UK (and the 4AD label in particular), this refined approach soon spread, particularly to the United States, slowly picking up the moniker “dream pop” – a catch-all term rather than a genre within itself.
Curated by the same team as our successful ‘Still In A Dream’ 2016 shoegaze set, ‘Cherry Stars Collide’ explores that sound as it emerged in the mid-80s and proceeded to define a less grounded, more thoughtful approach to musical expression than was offered elsewhere. Fusing and blending with other genres along the way. – from the guitar driven shoegaze movement and proto-Britpop to the post ‘C-86’ generation and the nascent leftfield clubbing scene – that sound both drew in artists already operating elsewhere and inspired new artists to embark their own journey.

Ruby Throat formed in 2007 during the time in which KatieJane Garside's band Queenadreena was in stages of dissolution. Ruby Throat was formed of herself and partner Chris Whittingham, an American from Hawaii. Known for the hard-edged musical aesthetic of Garside's former bands Daisy Chainsaw and Queenadreena, Garside sought a stripped down, folk-oriented sound when forming Ruby Throat, with many of the duo's songs being based around acoustic guitar, and evoking a folk noir sound. The duo's first release was The Ventriloquist (2007). The album was well-received, and critics drew comparisons to the work of PJ Harvey and others.

When two icons of electronic music team up for a collaborative project, the result is destined to become something extraordinary. New album ‘Beginn’ is a deft fusion of the talents of Claudia Brücken – famously the lead vocalist of revered German avant-pop 80s group Propaganda – and Jerome Froese – who, as son of electronic music pioneer and Tangerine Dream founder Edgar Froese, was himself a driving force and member of Tangerine Dream during one of their most successful and creative phases in which they garnered 7 Grammy nominations. Tangerine Dream; the German band widely credited as being the founding fathers of the whole ‘ambient’ genre.

Beloved Pennsylvania band The Innocence Mission, led by Karen and Don Peris, return with the exquisite and touching album See You Tomorrow. First track The Brothers Williams Said with Karen's stunning, heart-aching voice and a lyric both moving and profound, speaks to the sense of misunderstanding or labelling that can happen to people who have a quiet nature. Simon Raymonde of the Cocteau Twins calls the arrangements on See You Tomorrow "massively special- the beauty, the way the album builds to it's' striking finale in I Would Be There is bewilderingly lovely." See You Tomorrow touches on the major changes that happen in the life of a family, and the "intense desire to hold the present moment of togetherness". Sufjan Stevens has called their music "moving and profound. What is so remarkable about Karen Peris' lyrics are the economy of words, concrete nouns which come to life with melody."
