The Thomaskantor position in Leipzig was one of the most important jobs for musicians in Germany in the 18th century; several important musicians applied to succeed Johann Kuhnau after his death in 1722. In the recruitment process, the Leipzig city council was able to choose from the most famous personalities of the time. The first choice was Georg Philipp Telemann, who declined however, after he had obtained a decent salary increase at his Hamburg post.

Whenever Beethoven crossed my mind, the first thought always went to his Fifth Symphony. It was therefore the obvious choice for me to include it in my BTHVN album. Combining it with the more funky side of my music, the process was a fluid one, resulting in a track that stands out quiet a bit. Excited to see how it will do out there.

The Danish choir under Stefan Parkman is splendid in this repertory. Their almost flawless intonation and ensemble make easy work of Brahms's thick textures and rich harmony….An embarrassment of riches–one you should take advantage of.

Alberto Ginastera left his massive orchestral piece Popol Vuh, which had been commissioned by Eugene Ormandy, unfinished at his death in 1983, and it was only after it was discovered by pianist Barbara Nissman that it had its premiere in 1989, with Leonard Slatkin and Saint Louis Symphony. A musical reimagining of Mayan creation mythology, it's a monumental piece that viscerally evokes a primitive world using both folk elements and sophisticated modernist techniques. The composer wrote that he was aiming for a "reconstitution of the transcendental aspect of the ancient pre-Columbian world," and the piece is fully successful at capturing that vision with music that is powerfully primal, strange, and darkly beautiful.

When in the first decade of the twentieth century, pioneering Russian creative artists turned to the sun for inspiration, they saw this theme as a symbol of liberation from turn-of-the-century decadence. In The Canticle of the Sun the power of the sun celebrates two liberating forces: specifically, the dedicatee, Mstislav Rostropovich, who shed light in the darkness of the later Soviet years (Gubaidulina has even spoken of the work embodying his ‘sunny personality’) and more generally, the spiritual sources which the composer has explored through her own musical journey within and beyond Soviet Russia. The Canticle of the Sun is a response to a text by St Francis of Assisi, in which he humbly glorifies the creator. Gubaidulina, aware that the music should not be ostentatious or complicated, suggests the mysteries of creation and humanity through solo cello and percussion, and places St Francis’s text in the restrained mouths of the choir as a kind of wondering response. The second work on this disc is a setting of five poems by Marina Tsvetayeva for unaccompanied choir.

Another Koek is the first CD of the duo Knuijt and Dellebeke, mother Cora Dellebeke and son Stefan Knuijt. From their home village Nieuw- en Sint Joosland in the Dutch province of Zeeland they succeeded in building a career as meritorious musicians both within Zeeland and nationally. At the time they continued looking for challenges to play together and make uncommon presentations. “A different piece of cake,” one could say.

The grand opera Die Hugenotten was one of the greatest operatic successes of the 19th century, and its creator was hailed as the foremost composer of his time. Yet today, he is largely forgotten by the opera-going public and his works lie gathering dust in opera house repertories around the world.

The two sonatas by Johannes Brahms belong to the Olympus of the repertoire for every cellist, where, together with the suites by Bach and the sonatas by Beethoven, they virtually form the Trinity of our Old Testament. My own journey to these works began sometime in the 1980s and is – of course – still ongoing. I have had the opportunity to play both sonatas with many great pianists and thus get to know them from just as many different musical perspectives. Of course, I grew up with countless outstanding recordings, including a largely unknown one of the F Major Sonata by my own teacher William Pleeth with his wife, Margaret Good, which would also one day deserve to be made available to the public again.
