Marcin Swiatkiewicz, one of today’s leading harpsichordists, invites us to join him in the multifaceted and wondrous world of chromaticism on his latest release. He performs repertoire from the seventeenth century on an Italian harpsichord by Detmar Hungerberg with fourteen keys per octave (split upper keys for d sharp and e flat and for g sharp and a flat) and in mean-tone temperament. The repertoire from the eighteenth century is heard on a two-manual copy after Johannes Ruckers by Christian Fuchs. The chromatic style is a special musical phenomenon. Already highly valued by the Greeks during antiquity, it was discovered for the modern world by Humanist scholars of antiquity during the Italian renaissance.

He viewed his native countrys folklore as a fundamental part of his artistic heritage and his aesthetic ideas were formed under the influence of nineteenth-century Romanticism. His violin works occupy a special place in his oeuvre. The Sonata-Ballade is his violin masterpiece, full of idiosyncrasies and luminous warmth, while the miniatures encompass subtle charm and effortless virtuosity.

Like football (soccer) and coffee, the guitar is inextricably linked with Brazil in the collective imagination. Yet despite its significance to the country’s musical identity, the major class divide in the colonial period saw the guitar dismissed as an instrument of the common, uneducated populace, in contrast to the piano, which represented the aspirations of the wealthier middle classes.

Marco Antonio Cavazzoni private harpsichordist to the Duchess of Urbino and Pope Leo X, friend of Titian and Bembo composed some of the most important milestones in the history of instrumental music. They were published in Venice by Vercellese (1523), the second edition of Italian keyboard music after that of Andrea Antico [Naxos 8.572983]. Usually assigned to the organ, they are restored here to the harpsichord where they originally belonged, as explained in an online essay by Glen Wilson. Contemporary examples further illustrate the fascinating development of Cavazzonis major form, the ricercar. The project celebrates the 500th anniversary of the harpsichord on the cover (the worlds oldest), which was owned by Leo X and undoubtedly played on by Cavazzoni.

Count Imre Széchényi of Sárvár-Felsvidék moved in the highest echelons of the Austrian diplomatic service, in a career that ran parallel with his musical activities. Széchényis dances, all but three of which were composed in St Petersburg, were popular in his day, and of a quality that saw them placed in concert programmes by his friend Johann Strauss II. Appearing here in their premiere recordings, they reveal a brilliant collection of mazurkas and polkas with a keen sense of humour and deep feeling in their arching musical brush strokes and romantic melodies.
