With groups like Sex Mob, Millennial Territory Orchestra and Diaspora Soul, Steven Bernstein is energizing the downtown scene with a passionate and indefatigable creativity. His brilliance continues with Diaspora Suite, the fourth installment in his Diaspora series for Tzadik and perhaps the best! Twelve original compositions exploring the Jewish tradition are brilliantly performed by a nonet of California musicians including Ben Goldberg, Peter Apfelbaum and several key players from his legendary band the Hieroglyphics. Channeling Miles Davis, Gil Evans and the Sephardic traditions of Darkness and Light, this is fabulous new Jewish music by one of the most talented and charismatic figures in the downtown scene.

Who better to initiate the rebirth of Impulse! Records than Henry Butler? After all, the first time the label was given a new life in 1986, their first recording was Flyin' Around, his debut album as a leader. Viper's Drag is a collaboration between the pianist/composer with in-demand trumpeter and arranger Steven Bernstein (Sexmob, MTO Orchestra), surrounded by an all-star cast including drummer Herlin Riley, bassist Reggie Veal, saxophonists Michael Blake, Peter Apfelbaum, and Erik Lawrence, violinist Charlie Burnham, clarinetist Doug Wieselman, trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, and guitarist Matthew Munisteri. The set features readings of Fats Waller and Jelly Roll Morton tunes, three Butler originals, and two other classic pre-War numbers…

In this, the third installment in Steven Bernstein's Diaspora series, one of the most active and imaginative musicians in the downtown scene explores compositions from the Jewish tradition through the rose colored lens of West Coast Jazz. Actually recorded in the Hollywood Hills with a fabulous all star quintet including vibes and bass flute, Steve's lush arrangements take off from the intimate small group jazz sound of the Shelley Manne and Shorty Rogers units from the mid fifties. Beautiful arrangements that come from the heart and a savvy choice of traditional compositions make this one of Steve's greatest projects.

Tinctures in Time is the first original music Bernstein has ever written for the MTO, which from the beginning had exclusively been a vehicle for his arrangements of other people's songs, from Count Basie to Prince. Most of the album was composed in 2019, a tough year for Bernstein: Henry Butler had recently passed, and there were serious injuries and death in his immediate family. Like a lot of people do, Bernstein got through it by working. "I was spending a lot of time on planes, going to visit people in hospitals," he says. "So what else am I going to do with my time? I ended up with all this music."

Steven Bernstein first saw the late, great New Orleans pianist Henry Butler play in 1984. "He was genius-level brilliant, man," he says, still marveling. "I couldn't believe there was a guy who could sound like the most ancient music and the most futuristic music at the same time." Fourteen years later, Bernstein took Hal Willner's recommendation and hired Butler to play in the touring band that played the score for Robert Altman's film Kansas City. In 2013, the two musicians formed the Hot 9, the name a tip of the fedora to Louis Armstrong's landmark Hot Five and Hot Seven sessions of the 1920s. They released the acclaimed Viper's Drag album the following year, and toured until Butler's untimely passing in 2018.
