The highly personal style of American composer Benjamin Lees lends his music the lofty grandeur and sardonic wit, not only of Shostakovich but also of the Cubist and Surrealist artists, all of whom he so admires. Lees, who also shares Britten’s refined sense of harmony, delights in contrasts and surprises, enthralling the listener at every turn from the lyrical to the burlesque, the romantic to the brusque. His fifth string quartet was chosen by Chamber Music America as one of its 101 Great Ensemble Works.

The inclusion of a fine performance of the Divertimento composed just before the 6th Quartet is a welcome bonus on this set. The recordings date from 1966 (quartets) and 1964 (Divertimento, Hungarian Chamber Orchestra led by Vilmos Tátrai), and they sound very good, though dry compared with the excellent Takacs recording, which is justly regarded as one of the finest chamber music recordings yet made. Among the three I would recommend Takacs for those getting to know the music and wanting a 'best' recording performance, sound, the whole ball of wax. Otherwise, one can't go wrong with any of these (the Vegh set being a personal favorite), and the inclusion of the Divertimento makes this Tátrai recording a very attractive choice.

The quartet first performed at the Royal Academy of Music in 1965 to compete for a prize and set out to make the string quartets of Bartók and Beethoven the centre of their repertoire. In 1967, the quartet was appointed to be Leverhulme Scholars at Keele University, and in 1970, it changed its name from the Cropper to the Lindsay String Quartet, naming itself after Lord Lindsay, the founder of Keele University. 1971 brought a change in second violin to Ronald Birks. The quartet gained a Gramophone Award for the Late Beethoven Quartets in 1984. Roger Bigley left the quartet in 1985 to be replaced by Robin Ireland. Bigley then became assistant principal viola of the BBC Philharmonic orchestra before becoming assistant head of strings at the RNCM.
In 1974, they became Quartet-in-Residence at Sheffield University and five years later held a similar position at Manchester University, where they performed a regular concert season, directed seminars, and coached chamber ensembles. The quartet presented festivals each year at the Studio Theatre in the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, which featured many famous local and international musicians, and travelled widely throughout the world.

Joseph Schuster (1748-1812), born in Dresden, was best known in his day for his church music and operas. These six quartets date from 1780. They are commissioned by the Marquis Giuseppe Ximenes, a keen amateur violinist living in Padua, who had earlier given the young Mozart the commission for his oratorio La Betulia Liberata.

Hilding Rosenberg (1892 – 1985), the patriarch of 20th century Swedish music, wrote altogether 14 string quartets , the first in 1920 and the final more than half a century later. This makes him one of the most prolific composers of chamber music in Scandinavia. Also artistically, by virtue of his very personal approach, his power of expression and his technical mastery, Rosenberg’s production is truly outstanding.
This is the the first CD in a series of 6, also available in a boxed set. It contains the quartets No. 1, 6, and 12 performed by the Kyndel Quratet, The Gotland Quartet and The Copenhagen String Quartet.

The Wieniawski String Quartet makes its Naxos début with three important chamber compositions by its much-awarded compatriot Krzysztof Meyer, whose musical homeland is the chamber music of Viennese Classicism, enlivened with a dash of Bartok’s spicy musical accent. The composer describes his twelve string quartets as ‘sound-stories told with musical elements that the listener would care about, and not just a stream of acoustic stimuli’. High drama, playfulness, intense lyricism and narrative cohesion are the hallmarks of these splendid works.

Performing Arensky's First and Second string quartets, along with the Piano Quintet, is the Ying Quartet. This ensemble's playing is characterized by a surprisingly precise, consistent uniformity of sound and exactness of articulation, making it seem as if a single instrument were playing as opposed to four independent parts. All aspects of their technical execution are polished and refined, which only enhances their equally enjoyable musical effusiveness, rich, deep tone, and understanding of Arensky's scores that casts them in the best possible light. This level of integrity continues …..

“Technically speaking the Emerson String Quartet are unimpeachable, with meticulous internal balance and intonation sustained at all times, remarkable tonal matching between the instruments and precision phrasing and dynamics. There is a beguiling transparency about their sound-world that allows every voice to register with the kind of resonance-free clarity . . . ” - International Record Review, London, July 2008

Praised for his previous choral music albums, British composer and conductor Ronald Corp now makes his Naxos chamber music début with this disc. His First String Quartet takes its name from the world’s largest, most stately and regal bird, the bustard, whose soaring flight and dance-like gait are evoked in this fascinating piece. His Second String Quartet celebrates a baby boy’s birth with joyful and exuberant music. The composer describes his song-cycle Country Matters as ‘poignant and riotously outrageous’. The Maggini Quartet are renowned for their authoritative interpretations of English chamber music, while tenor Mark Wilde also sings on several other Naxos recordings.
