Who says you can't make a great record in one day – or night, as the case may be? The Trinity Session was recorded in one night using one microphone, a DAT recorder, and the wonderful acoustics of the Holy Trinity in Toronto. Interestingly, it's the album that broke the Cowboy Junkies in the United States for their version of "Sweet Jane," which included the lost verse. It's far from the best cut here, though. There are other covers, such as Margo Timmins' a cappella read of the traditional "Mining for Gold," a heroin-slow version of Hank Williams' classic "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," "Dreaming My Dreams With You" (canonized by Waylon Jennings), and a radical take of the Patsy Cline classic "Walkin' After Midnight" that closes the disc. Those few who had heard the band's previous album, Whites Off Earth Now!!, were aware that, along with Low, the Cowboy Junkies were the only band at the time capable of playing slower than Neil Young and Crazy Horse – and without the ear-threatening volume.
Monomyth, unleashed from The Netherlands, is the journey . . . the five who explore and expand the boundaries of their own musical universe. Firmly rooted in Space, Trance and Krautrock, the band leans heavily on a solid foundation of drums and bass guitar, while adding guitar, keyboards and textures layer upon layer. Monomyth will drag you inside their cosmic playground. Enter an arena where there is no more time or space, simply the vacuum in which communication is operated on a higher level. You can enter in two ways . . . simply by closing your eyes and letting the instrumental music transport you, or with eyes wide open as you descend into the mind staggering light show.
Huis ("home doors" in french, and "house" in dutch). This is a very appropriate name for the band that comes out of Montreal, Quebec Canada. Their beautiful atmospheres and great rhythm sections make you feel right at home with their music and compositions. Their 2016 release "Neither In Heaven" is a solid confirmation of how music can more than just move a person but make them feel at home within the album or project.
Coming off the heals of their previous album of 2014 "Despite Guardian Angels", the band has returned with a much more atmospheric and darker composition that is "Neither In Heaven". For a band that appears as neo-progressive on the surface, Huis certainly has a whole other side that is out right dark and heavy…
Le Tout-Puissant Orchestre Poly-Rythmo is a difficult ensemble to follow. For one thing, they have functioned under the names Poly Rythmo de Cotonou, TP Orchestre Poly-Rythmo and L'International Poly-Rythmo among others. Add to that, a frequently shifting line up, a series of serious misadventures, a long period of dormancy, and their lack of familiarity outside of Benin (in West Africa) is understandable.
The classic ‘lost’ debut from London proto-punk legends and masters of disorder The Hollywood Brats.
The British post-rock favourites return, better late than never. Yndi Halda have never been in a hurry. Born in Kent but now based in Brighton, their first and till now last release saw songs stretch into 20-minute symphonic slow-blooms with shades of Tortoise, Mono and the Erased Tapes stable, in a scene and on a label then full of frenzied math bands. That mini-album’s title also riffed on a vast, endless span of time: Enjoy Eternal Bliss read its sleeve, their band name translated from Old Norse. Neither the group nor their cult fan base, however, saw its follow-up taking a whole decade to surface.
