Based on the Royal Theme from Bach's Musical Offering, Offertorium is aptly subtitled "Violin Concerto" to reflect the role of the solo violin, here brilliantly played by Gidon Kremer, for whom it was written. It's in three continuous sections, each distributed as a series of Webernesque deconstruction. The extensive violin part is technically demanding, and the vigorous orchestral interjections range from the hauntingly wispy to the aggressively colorful. The Homage à T.S. Eliot can be described as "mystical with backbone," perfectly complementing the texts, drawn from Eliot's Four Quartets. The music itself is mesmerizing. All in all, Gubaidulina's writing stands solidly on its own as a masterpiece.

Clara Wieck Schumann has often been misleadingly referred to as the wife of composer Robert Schumann, and as one of the leading pianists of her day, rather than as a composer in her own right. Beginning in the last quarter of the twentieth century however, her stature as a composer finally became recognized. Still, she cannot by any reasonable measure be ranked as a major composer, owing in great part to her relatively small output.

Time has not treated Curved Air's second album kindly. Of course it was always dominated by "Back Street Luv," which isn't simply one of the band's own finest moments, it's also one of the crucial singles of the early 1970s. But across this straightforward reissue of the accompanying album, the savage innovation which was the hallmark of their Air Conditioning debut, and the brilliant eclecticism which would characterize their next set, is nowhere in sight. Which is weird, because it always used to sound quite good.

When Rush issued Vapor Trails in 2002, they revealed that – even after Neil Peart's personal tragedies in the 1990s had cast the group's future in doubt – they were back with a vengeance. The sound was hard-hitting, direct, and extremely focused. Lyrically, Peart went right after the subject matter he was dealing with – and it was in the aftermath of 9/11 as well, which couldn't help but influence his lyric writing…

On January 8th 1970, in a car accident a few kilometers outside Athens, the contemporary music world lost one of its most exciting and provocative talents. Although Jani Christou was only 44 when he died, he was regarded by many as one of the leading composers of his generation. He was controversial, highly talented, and greatly admired both in his own country and abroad. And yet although his name remains respected in contemporary music circles to this day, performances of his music are extremely rare.

In its concision and intensity, Gyorgy Kurtag’s choral music pursues a similar approach to his instrumental work. All three cycles were begun during 1979-81, though the process of completion was very different. Omaggio a Luigi Nono (1981) evolved quickly, perhaps because expressive consistency overrides technical diversity – the cycle centring on texts by Rimma Dalos that paraphrase earlier sources so as to reinforce their sentiments by seeming to contradict them. In their relative purity as choral music, they differ markedly from Eight Choruses, to poems by Dezso Tandori (1984) – aphorisms posing as riddles, embodied in writing that evokes a near-orchestral range of sonority, an “instrumentation” that is made graphic in Songs of Despair and Sorrow (1994). These settings of mainly short-lived Russian poets embody some of Kurtag’s most plangent writing, aided by an ensemble – two harmoniums and four bayans (Russian accordions) alongside brass, strings and percussion – remarkable for the way it is subsumed into the chorus as if an extension of that being communicated.

Mungo Jerry are one of rock's great one-hit successes. Outside of England, they're known for exactly one song, but that song, "In the Summertime," is a seasonal anthem known by listeners who weren't even born when it was released. Mungo Jerry was a solid blues outfit as well – in fact, one suspects they were the kind of blues band that purists Alexis Korner and Cyril Davies would have loved, had they ever intersected – and knew how to get the most out of their jug band sound, which helped them survive for decades.

Jethro Tull's first album, THIS WAS, recorded and released in 1968, shows a band that is a far cry from their better-known incarnation as a prog rock outfit in the late 1970s. Instead, Tull come across here as a solid and talented blues band with elements of jazz, folk, and psychedelia thrown in. The band's sound was heavily influenced by guitarist, singer, and songwriter Mick Abrahams, whose bluesy singing and leads distinguish this disc in Tull's discography. Frontman Ian Anderson also shines with tunes like "Some Day the Sun Won't Shine for You" and the excellent cover of Rashaan Roland Kirk's "Serenade to a Cuckoo."

Jethro Tull was a unique phenomenon in popular music history. Their mix of hard rock; folk melodies; blues licks; surreal, impossibly dense lyrics; and overall profundity defied easy analysis, but that didn't dissuade fans from giving them 11 gold and five platinum albums…
