Cool, West Coast Jazz, Mainstream Jazz

One of the most infamously acrimonious musical unions transpired between two of the leading purveyors of West Coast cool jazz: Chet Baker (trumpet) and Stan Getz (tenor sax). Their paths crossed only a handful of times and West Coast Live captures two of their earliest encounters in Los Angeles at the Haig on June 12, 1953, and the Tiffany Club on August 17, 1953. These recordings have been issued in Europe and Japan ad infinitum in varying degrees of quality, completeness, and often sporting erroneous data. However, enthusiasts should note that West Coast Live is the only release derived from producer/engineer Dick Bock's own master reels. For two men who purportedly would rather not be in the same room at the same time, Baker and Getz are able to create some legitimately brilliant improvisation. For the Haig set, Getz had been brought in to co-lead a quartet with Baker for an incarcerated Gerry Mulligan.

The violin's an unlikely instrument for a jazz tune - but as you'll hear in this set, it's one that can sound pretty darn great when handled by the right artist! The collection has a strong focus on European use of the violin in jazz during the 60s and 70s - in a movement that took the instrument strongly past its older swing-based use in the US, and into hipper territory that really explored its sonic properties with a lot more depth! Some tunes have a rootsy feel, others are more open and electric - and a good bit of this material (nearly all of it) was recorded for the MPS label, and benefits from both the strong production and new freedoms allowed to its artists.

Amazon Review by Stuart Jefferson
If you're a blues fan chances are you're already familiar with (if you don't already own) some/many/all of these albums. But if you don't own these sets (or have only a few) this is a good way to own all 20 albums in one nice, neat box. The sound is the same as the individual albums which is very good for the various periods when these tracks were originally recorded. The jackets are fairly thick cardboard and are reproductions of the original covers. The outer box is also of good quality. There's a 34 page booklet that has a few paragraphs on each disc, and track lists, but no detailed liner notes to really put this music into some kind of perspective, but information on these artists and styles is available in various blues books/encyclopedias and on the internet.

Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass sold more albums than almost anyone else in the '60s, so it's no surprise that any goofball with a trumpet would try to cash in on their effortlessly enjoyable, upbeat, instrumental style. And, indeed, there were plenty of those. Making a vocal album, however, is another story. Who in their right mind would attempt an entire album of singing new words to famous instrumentals? But that is what Big Band veterans the Modernaires did, setting lyrics to Alpert & Co.'s numerous hit tunes. The tight-harmony vocal quintet used to sing with the likes of Glen Miller back in the '40s, so presumably this was their attempt to get, er, "mod".

A bit tighter and more conventional soul than earlier work by Starpoint, but still pretty darn great too - and great proof that the group were more on top of their bag than other funky combos of the type. Renee Diggs is strongly out front on vocals throughout - lending her sweet sound to the flurry of electro keys and beats that make up most of the instrumentation here. The instrumentation's almost got some echoes of the Minneapolis funky soul scene at the times, but echoes the group's older sound at other points - and although a few tracks are quite hook heavy, they're never too poppish or cloying. Titles include "Behind Your Back", "Don't Be So Serious", "Put Your Love On Me", "It's So Delicious", "Let Go", and "I Got The Love".

You're nursing your brew at the local blues jam waiting on your turn. You've got a solid six or so blues grooves under your belt but darn, someone already called the Stormy blues and that SRV jam. Next guy called the minor blues ala B.B. and then, as luck would have it, the Chicago shuffle groove in the same key you do it in. Fingers are crossed but of course cat number three calls both your slow blues and that uptempo straight-ahead thing you feel solid on.
