1982's The Message has a good claim to being the greatest rap album of the old school years. It was the first politically radical rap album of its era exploring the various inequalities of 1980s America. No rap act at that point had channelled the mood and struggles of the streets onto record. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five became the first to address the reality of inner city life in New York's boroughs. Tracks such as the renowned "The Message" certified them as one of the most influential groups in hip-hop's history. This Expanded Edition of their classic album now includes additional bonus such as "The Message II", "New York New York", the instrumental of the "Message" plus "The Adventure Of Grandmaster Himself", a cut up of various classic breaks that only appeared 20 years after the original recording. Also included are new extended sleeve notes and brand new photos.

This is an unusual edition of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers because it includes pianist Keith Jarrett and trumpeter Chuck Mangione (well before their respective solo careers took off), along with tenor saxophonist Frank Mitchell and bassist Reggie Workman, though this was the only commercial recording by this edition of the band. Mangione contributed several originals to the date and takes many strong solos. The influence of Bill Evans is readily apparent in several of Jarrett's brief solos, while Mitchell commands attention in the explosive romp through "Secret Love." Recorded live at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, the sound quality of this reissue (originally issued by Limelight under the title Buttercorn Lady) is a bit muddy, probably due to tape deterioration…

British supergroup Electronic was the intermittent collaboration formed by Joy Division/New Order vocalist Bernard Sumner and ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. Also featuring the Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant, the band was an influential taste-making force that released three groundbreaking albums throughout the '90s before its members moved on creatively. For the time that these dynamic artists came together as Electronic, their dance-flavored sound pulsed with the freedom they experienced making music outside of their other, higher profile groups. Though their first gig was performing for 70,000 people at L.A.'s Dodger Stadium, Electronic's collective spirit was personal and independent-minded. Infused with spirit and innovation, it made for some of the '90s most compelling U.K.-centric altrock.

The Stanley Clarke Band moniker goes back at least as far as 1985's electro-funk-inflected Find Out!, and picked up in earnest with 2010's eponymously titled The Stanley Clarke Band. The only real through-line, however, is virtuoso bass pioneer Clarke, who leads his ever-evolving bands through what are usually a stylistically varied set of songs that touch upon driving jazz-fusion, funky crossover jams, harmonically nuanced acoustic modal bop, and even forays into classical. It's a cross-pollinated vibe he championed on 2014's Up and one he returns to with conceptual gusto on 2018's expansive The Message. Joining him are pianist Beka Gochiashvili (who previously played Up), keyboardist Cameron Graves, and drummer Mike Mitchell.
