Bruce Springsteen once said he intended to make an album with words like Bob Dylan that sounded like Phil Spector where he sang like Roy Orbison, a nifty summary of many, but not all, of his artistic ambitions and a key to his appeal. Unlike any other singer/songwriters saddled with the appellation of "the new Dylan" in the early '70s,

When news first emerged in late 1989 that the E Street Band had been dismissed indefinitely by Bruce Springsteen, it began nine years of uncertainty and speculation as to when, if ever, they would join forces again. They did come back together to record new material for Greatest Hits in 1995 and undertook a small series of promotional appearances in support of it, but the fact that they parted ways again without touring only made the odds of a full return feel even longer.

We often cite the Reunion tour as a demarcation between the “classic” and “modern” Springsteen eras. Yet this April already marks 23 years since the start of the Reunion tour in Barcelona. Do the math, and the E Street Band’s return in 1999 is inching ever closer to being the midpoint of their overall career—a line to be reached in 2026, at which point it will have been 27 years from the start of Reunion; and Reunion itself was 27 years after the band formed in 1972. Time flies.

From every standpoint outside the financial, the Who's reunion tour in 1989 was a mistake. Yes, it was a success and millions of fans went home happy, but in retrospect, it's clear that the reunion tour – following just seven years after the "farewell tour" – tarnished the reputation of the Who almost irreparably.

The legendary ten-show, August ’84 stand at Brendan Byrne Arena culminates in special performances with the Miami Horns and Stevie Van Zandt, particularly the pitch-perfect cover of Dobie Gray’s “Drift Away.” Stevie also duets on “Two Hearts”, while the Horns enliven “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out,” “Detroit Medley” and “Twist and Shout - Do You Love Me?” With “Cover Me,” “Darlington County,” “I’m Goin’ Down,” “Spirit in the Night,” “Darkness” and more, 8/20/84 is Peak Born in the U.S.A. Neil Young is rightly regarded as one of the most influential singer-songwriters, ranking with Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney in influence and prolificacy. And much like the other two, he has amassed an extensive archive of unpublished and unreleased songs which he’s begun to touch with his massive Archive series of box sets. Road Of Plenty is perhaps the most ambitious unofficial Neil Young release in recent memory. It is a comprehensive six disc collection of songs which have never been released (and probably never will). A majority are sourced from excellent live audience recordings (since that is the only source we have for them), but there are other excellent quality studio outtakes included as well.
