For the first time under the direction of a foreigner, Paolo Damiani, the French orchestra explores themes related to the Mediterranean area. With the help of special guests Anouar Brahem and Gianluigi Trovesi, the Italian musical director offers musical landscapes that encompass the various aspects of the region. The album opens with a suite penned by Trovesi, which digs deep into the Italian musical tradition, but also incorporates more recent influences from the Middle East and Africa. With the brass instruments in the forefront, it is definitely the most colorful and animated segment of the disc.
Cam Jazz, the company behind the great series of Black Saint/Soul Note reissues, presents the first release in a new line – the complete works by artists on the Italian label Dischi Della Quercia. The inaugural set presents the complete label output from famed Italian pianist Giorgio Gaslini and includes eleven albums that have been unavailable in the US until now. Each is presented in a slipcase with the original album artwork and housed in a sturdy box. Pianist, composer, conductor and music instructor, Gaslini is credited as the mentor of some of the finest contemporary Italian musicians. In addition to his jazz ensembles, Gaslini also composed for theater, television and films and has composed classical symphonies, ballets, operas, and chamber music.
Over a period of five years, Swiss directors Norbert Wiedmer and Peter Guyer documented the activity of legendary producer Manfred Eicher, the founder and driving force behind ECM Records, whose advocacy of progressive jazz and of classical composers like Arvo Pärt, Meredith Monk, Valentin Silvestrov, and György Kurtág changed the landscape of contemporary music in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The film Sounds and Silence: Travels with Manfred Eicher was released in 2009 and this 2011 soundtrack album is made up largely of tracks taken from previously released ECM albums that Eicher produced, some from as early as 1980. Most of the pieces are low-key and understated and feature chamber ensembles, although there are several piano tracks and several featuring orchestra or chorus. The album has a mix of selections from ECM's classical and jazz repertoire, and from the label's specialty, the many pieces that lie somewhere in between the two.
First ECM album by the French big band celebrated as an important institution in contemporary jazz. ONJ projects have stressed both the strength of French improvising and the potential for collaboration with musicians of other backgrounds and cultures.
For “Charmediterranéen” (“Mediterranean Spell”), the orchestra is joined by two artists familiar to ECM listeners: Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem, and Italian reedman Gianluigi Trovesi. The ONJ operates a revolving leadership policy, with a new director elected every three years. Since 2000 the musical director has been the Italian cellist/composer Paolo Damiani, who has previously appeared on ECM’s recording of the Italian Instabile Orchestra.
The Castel del Monte near Ruvo di Puglia, Southern Italy, was the last and most beautiful building of Frederick II. (1194-1250), Roman emperor and King of Sicily. It dominates the Apulian landscape like a white crystal, a fata morgana beyond time and space whose original purpose will probably remain a mystery forever. When German producer Achim Hebgen and French musician Michel Godard visited the castle together, they felt there should be music created in and for the building - music that is simultaneously in the past, the present and the future. Along the borders between Mediterranean folk song and modern composition, mediaeval tradition and jazz improvisation, the first "Castel Del Monte" project (ENJ-9362 2) became a great musical document of the European-Arabic heritage and its historical continuity. Critics liked it all over Europe: CD of the month (Stereoplay), Rating: **** ½ (Jazzthetik), "Un sentiment d'éternité; **** (Jazzman).
