I was ten years old, and then the German people, or so it said in the newspaper, were giving all 10-year-olds to the Fuhrer. We were given to the Fuhrer(for Hitler's birthday). On the big sports ground the entire section was assembled. All the platoons stood in serried ranks and publicly swore and oath of allegiance. I remember the words. "I promise always to do my duty in the Hitler Youth out of love and loyalty to the Fuhrer and our Flag.

Erich von Manstein served the German military as a lifelong professional soldier. He became one of the most prominent commanders of Nazi Germany's armed forces (Wehrmacht). During World War II he attained the rank of Field Marshal and was held in high esteem by his fellow officers as one of the Wehrmacht's best military minds.
He was the initiator and one of the planners of the Ardennes-offensive alternative in the invasion of France in 1940. He received acclaim from the Nazi-German leadership for the victorious battles of Perekop Isthmus, Kerch, Sevastopol and Kharkov. He commanded the failed relief effort at Stalingrad and the Cherkassy pocket evacuation. He was dismissed from service by Adolf Hitler in March 1944, due to his frequent clashes with Hitler over military strategy.

Paulus, Friedrich von (1890–1957) German field-marshal. As deputy chief of staff he planned the German invasion of Russia (Operation Barbarossa) in World War II. In 1942 he failed to capture STALINGRAD, was cut off, and surrendered (February 1943). In captivity, he joined a Soviet-sponsored German organization and publicly advocated the overthrow of the Nazi dictatorship. He lived in East Germany until his death.

Ernst Udet (April 26, 1896 – November 17, 1941)
Though not interested in politics, Udet joined the Nazi party in 1933 when Göring promised to buy him two new US aeroplanes, the Curtiss Export Hawk II. The planes were used for evaluation purposes and thus indirectly influenced the German idea of dive bombing aeroplanes, such as the Junkers Ju 87 (Stuka) bombers. They were also used for aerobatic shows held during the 1936 Summer Olympics. Udet piloted one of them, which luckily survived the war and is now on display in the Polish Aviation Museum (pictured).

In January 1945 Hitler engaged his new working office - underground in the bunker, and since then he never no longer saw neither dawns nor sunsets nor solar rays.
