Tadd Dameron’s working instrument was the piano though, in a be-bop universe dominated by Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, he didn’t pretend to be a virtuoso. Anyway, keyboard mastery was irrelevant because Dameron’s real genius lay in composition and even his arranging skills were much appreciated by his bop peers. Described by veteran producer/historian Ira Gitler as "a gracious, soft-spoken man", Dameron’s lyricism, laced with impressionism, shines in classics like Charlie Parker’s Hot House, Dizzy Gillespie’s Good Bait and Our Delight, Fats Navarro’s The Squirrel, Billy Eckstine’s Cool Breeze and Sarah Vaughan’s shimmering If You Could See Me Now (for which he also wrote the lyrics). And, in this new album celebrating his work, singer Vanessa Rubin presents familiar Dameronia mixed with a few pieces that have been overlooked.

Tenor sax battles have been an indelible part of jazz, as witnessed by the legendary Coleman Hawkins/Lester Young battles, the classic Dexter Gordon/Wardell Gray albums, and the Rollins/Coltrane "Tenor Madness". Add this 1971 skirmish between James Moody and Al Cohn to the list. A mainstay in Gillespie's big band and quintet, Moody worked with many of the music’s greats. His solo on I'm in the Mood for Love is a jazz classic. Cohn is recognized for his part in Woody Herman’s famous Four Brothers tenor sax section, as well as his quintet with fellow tenor great Zoot Sims.

After being very active on records and in clubs from 1955-62, pianist Red Garland went back to his native Texas. He did not return to records until 1971, when he cut "Auf Wiedersehen" and this particular LP, which has not yet been reissued on CD; except for a couple of Japanese dates in 1974, it would be another six years before Garland began making a real comeback. Teamed up with Jimmy Heath (who doubles on tenor and soprano), bassist Peck Morrison and drummer Lenny McBrowne, Garland plays in the same distinctive style he had in the 1950s, not showing any decline or loss of chops. The quartet performs four jazz standards, the title cut (a Heath original), and Leroy Vinnegar's "For Carl".

Under the watchful eye of famed producer Michael Cuscuna, this nine-CD set serves as a compilation of Stitt's 1950s and 1960s Roost LPs. This release also features a 28-page booklet consisting of comprehensively annotated liners. Moreover, the record label does its best to convey the artistic element via a series of black-and-white photos of Stitt and his sidemen amid anecdotes by many of the late saxophonist's affiliates. Interestingly enough, seven of the original LPs did not list personnel. In some instances, guesses were made, although most of these tracks are well-documented, thanks to the producer's diligence and painstaking research. Artists such as drummer Roy Haynes, bassist/composer Charles Mingus, and pianist Harold Maber represent but a few of Stitt's accompanists.
