Taipei Story

In the overpopulated metropolis of Taipei, two men and a woman literally circle each other. Mei-mei is a lonely real-estate agent who uses it for her sexual affairs. One day she misplaces the keys to one of her vacant apartments. The young, hesitant, and gay Hsiao-kang, who sells funeral-urn space, takes the keys and happily takes to living surreptitiously in the apartment, unaware that Mei and the footloose, cocky Ah-jung also use the flat regularly.

A quirky comedy about a young man who sells watches in the streets of Taipei. He sells his own watch to a young woman who is leaving for Paris the next day. An audience's favorite at the 2009 Kaohsiung Film Festival, Taiwanese director Looloo Lu's (assistant director for idol drama Honey and Clover) directorial debut Life of Never End Co. Ltd. tugs at heartstrings, making the audience laugh and weep, often at the same time. The touching Drama tells the simple story of a seven-year-old girl (Sandy Lin) and her granny (acclaimed actress Lu Yi Ching). Taipei girl Chi Ting is forced to stay with her granny in Kaohsiung when her parents leave her there one day. In Chi Ting's eyes, granny is a weirdo, what with her Taoist medium profession and her claim that she's the director of the so-called "Life of Never End Co. Ltd." Chi Ting wishes to go back to Taipei to find her parents, so she begins to sneak away, only to be caught by the pesky granny every single time. In Taipei, Taiwan, a television executive is helping the emcee of a television show about child prodigies prepare for a segment featuring a young chess prodigy. While he does this, he remembers a visit to the mainland at the time of the Cultural Revolution to visit a cousin. While traveling by train, he encountered another chess player who was on his way to a prison camp. As he wonders what happened to him, the film cuts back and forth between the two different stories. One is about the cutthroat competition the prodigy must face in 1980s Taipei, the other is about tournament competition in Chinese labor camps in the 1960s. This film looks like two films cobbled together, because that's exactly what it is. After the director of the prison-camp chess match film walked off the job, the film sat on the shelf until the producer could think up a way to finish it. His solution was to shoot a parallel, contemporary story and intercut between the two.
