Takuro Okada – Konoma

In un sobborgo di Tokyo il giovane Okada Toru ha appena lasciato volontariamente il suo lavoro e si dedica ai lavori di casa. Due episodi apparentemente insignificanti riescono tuttavia a rovesciare la sua vita tranquilla: la scomparsa del gatto di casa e la telefonata anonima di una donna che con voce sensuale gli chiede un incontro. Toru si accorgerà presto che oltre al gatto, a cui la moglie Kumiko è molto affezionata, dovrà cercare Kumiko stessa. Lo spazio limitato del suo quotidiano diventa il teatro di una ricerca in cui sogni, ricordi e realtà si confondono e che lo porterà ad incontrare personaggi sempre più strani.

One of the 1960s’ great international art-house sensations, Woman in the Dunes (Suna no onna) was for many the grand unveiling of the surreal, idiosyncratic world of Hiroshi Teshigahara. Eiji Okada plays an amateur entomologist who has left Tokyo to study an unclassified species of beetle found in a vast desert. When he misses his bus back to civilization, he is persuaded to spend the night with a young widow (Kyoko Kishida) in her hut at the bottom of a sand dune. What results is one of cinema’s most unnerving and palpably erotic battles of the sexes, as well as a nightmarish depiction of everyday life as a Sisyphean struggle – an achievement that garnered Teshigahara an Academy Award nomination for best director.

The brilliant French Hammond organist and pianist Eddy Louiss worked with the likes of Kenny Clarke, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Stan Getz; reed player John Surman and drummer Daniel Humair have long been major forces on the European scene. Louiss also recorded the title piece on Stan Getz’s “Dynasty” album – here the trio presents a wilder version with fiery solos from Surman’s baritone and Louiss on Hammond. This trio likes their Sabi hot with a Spanish tinge.
