Like the previous Ace compilation A Gerry Goffin & Carole King Song Collection 1961-1967, this CD has 26 vintage recordings of Goffin & King compositions, this one spanning the early '60s to the early '70s.

Rhino's five-disc box set Respect: A Century of Women in Music was surely assembled with the best of intentions, but it doesn't quite work. First of all, any collection that focuses solely on "the female contribution" comes off as a little condescending, no matter how good the intentions are. Still, the concept has enough weight to make for at least an interesting listen. However, any compilation that spans nearly 100 years and every conceivable popular musical genre is bound not only to be incomplete, but too sweeping to be totally effective. The scope is impressive, as are the featured artists – think of any major female musician and they're likely to be here, unless it's Joni Mitchell (Kim Gordon and Kim Deal are also missing, as are several other similarly minded post-punk rockers and various pop and folk singer/songwriters, but no omission is as shocking as Mitchell's) – but the overall effect is somewhat bewildering.

2017 three CD set. One of RPM Records defining releases remains the Dream Babes series, the Brit Girl Sound collections which started in 1994 and ran until 2007 reaching volume 8. The scene for collecting such sounds has only grown bigger and more international since then. Now it is time for RPM's concluding word on the subject of it's own series with this set. 80 tracks, none duplicated from the DB series, many tracks fresh to CD, five tracks previously unreleased. Compiled with much learned, many archive tapes unearthed, and recordings dug from crates since the series last volume. The Commonwealth gets a nod too, with Kiwi gals and Caribbean queens. Not forgetting Schoolgirls and secretaries, convent girls and actresses, daughters of diplomats, god-daughters of royalty and stars before they were stars.

It was the logical extension of two of the most important and enduring pop music tributaries of the 1960s – the girl group sound and the garage band explosion, respectively – but the distaff garage rock scene has earned precious little documentation on record or in history books over the years. Romulan's long-running Girls in the Garage series has done much to rectify that oversight, however, compiling an astounding amount of prime crunch – the first CD volume in the series is also its strongest, adding 11 tracks to the 16 that made up the original vinyl. Like all garage collections, there are equal amounts killer and filler, and the joy of discovery is alone worth the price of admission – Denise & Co.'s "Boy, What Will You Do Then," the Belles' "Come Back," and Lydia Marcelle's "The Girl He Needs" are top-shelf by any standard, however, and the Continental Co-Ets' blistering instrumental "Melody of Junk" dismisses once and for all any lingering misconceptions that the girls couldn't rock as hard as the boys.
