Here is a major repertory hole filler: a decent cross-section of the piano music of Polish-born composer Alexandre Tansman on a single Chandos disc, featuring pianist Margaret Fingerhut. Tansman was himself a pianist of better than fair ability and produced much keyboard music for his own use; his piano music provides a snapshot glimpse of the various stages of development that Tansman went through.

Alexandre Tansman’s guitar music was almost exclusively created as the result of his friendship with the legendary Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia. The true extent of this catalogue has only recently become apparent, with unknown works emerging from archive sources. Performed after careful research into the original manuscripts, Andrea De Vitis’s programme brings together pieces that reference Tansman’s favourite musicians from history, in particular Bach and Chopin - masterfully intertwining personal affections with sophisticated techniques to create some of the most important guitar repertoire of the 20th century.

The pieces presented on the CD grow from a common root – three outstanding Polish composers of the 20th century - Grażyna Bacewicz, Aleksander Tansman and Krzysztof Penderecki. They are extremely varied in terms of emotion, Sonata No. 4 for Violin and Piano by Bacewicz reveals neo-romantic features; neoclassical Faintaisie for Violin and Piano by Tansman astonishes with its care for sound colour, whereas monumental Sonata No. 2 for Violin and Piano by Penderecki intrigues with the musical language which, based on the twelve-note scale, treats it in a melodic and harmonic manner.

"Paris Bar" is the name of the new album by the highly acclaimed Notos Quartet from Berlin. And again the ensemble impresses with unusual repertoire, for "Paris Bar" they chose piano quartets of the 20s and 30s by Jean Françaix and Alexandre Tansman. And on "Paris Bar" there is even a world premiere recording - a work by the Hungarian composer Laslo Lajtha

Tansman was Polish but spent most of his life in Paris. He was invited to become a seventh member of Les Six but refused. (It would have had to become Les Sept.) He became a French citizen in 1938 but, as he was Jewish, he left Paris and spent the war years in Hollywood where he worked on films. He returned after the war. He was hugely prolific with several operas, nine symphonies, eight string quartets and many other works to his name. He is sometimes grouped with Szymanowski, Lutoslawski and Penderecki as one of the leading Polish composers of his time but, I think it is fair to say, is far less well known now. However, he has been increasingly recorded – you can, for example get all nine of his symphonies, and I have greatly enjoyed his quartets (Etcetera KTC 2017).

Nonesuch Records releases the late Henryk Górecki’s final composition, Symphony No. 4, Tansman Episodes, on January 22, 2016. The recording was made during the 2014 world premiere performance at Royal Festival Hall with co-commissioner London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Andrey Boreyko. The piece, which pays homage to Górecki’s fellow Polish composer Alexsander Tansman, was incomplete at the time of Górecki’s 2010 death and thus missed its previously scheduled premiere. However the score had precise indications for orchestration, which Górecki’s son Mikolaj, also a composer, used to complete it. The Daily Telegraph said the piece "caps Górecki's reputation as an orchestral composer, but it also contains some surprises. The music … features some brutal juxtapositions of massively powerful music with slow, intimate passages for solo instruments, including prominent parts for piano and organ".

Praised for his “smooth, rich and sweet sound and impeccable virtuosity”, guitarist Thibaut Garcia releases his second album on Erato, a recital of works composed and inspired by Johann Sebastian S Bach.
“Bach has been part of my life as a musician since the very start,” he says. Taking Bach’s mighty Chaconne as his centrepiece, he ranges wide: from Gounod’s much-loved ‘Ave Maria’ and Villa-Lobos’s Bachianas Brasileiras No 5 to music by Agustín Barrios Mangoré, Alexandre Tansman and the contemporary Serbian-American composer Dušan Bogdanović.
