Born in 1991, Daniil Trifonov is a Russian pianist who began playing the piano at the age of five. As a teen, he was active in competitions, participating in the International Scriabin Competition and the International Piano Competition of San Marino. In 2010, he won third prize in the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw and won the Special Prize of Polish Radio for Best Mazurka performance. He placed first in 2011 at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition, and won the Pnina Salzman Prize for the Best Performer of a Chopin Piece, among other awards. Soon after winning the Rubinstein Competition, Trifonov won the grand prize of the International Tchaikovsky Competition, which led to his recording Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra. In the wake of so many youthful achievements, he has also received scholarships, including the Scriabin Scholarship, the "Young Talents of Russia" Foundation Scholarship, and the Guzik Foundation Award.

On his first Mariinsky recording, he joins Valery Gergiev for a scintillating performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No 1. Trifonov also presents a selection of recital repertoire including music by Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Liszt transcriptions of Schubert and Schumann lieder. In 2011, Trifonov gave his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra and has since performed with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Mariinsky Orchestra, as well as touring throughout the USA, Europe and the Far East. Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov is one of the contenders for the mantle of hot new Russian phenomenon, and he is gifted with the rare combination of incredible speed and a fairly natural manner in slower lyric material. Here he takes on the thankless task of creating something new out of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 23, which he, like every other winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition going back to Van Cliburn, has been given the opportunity to record.

Trifonov is a powerhouse in the Lisztian mold, and his incredible technique seems better suited to fast, flashy fingerwork than to more subdued music. Certain pieces, such as the Rondo in F major, Op. 5, "À la Mazur," the Étude in F major, Op. 10/8, and the Grande Valse Brillante, Op. 18, allow feats of prestidigitation, and there's no denying that he can perform with dazzling virtuosity.

This group of Rachmaninov piano trios was released in celebration of the 70th birthday of Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer. One might have expected something that placed Kremer more in the spotlight than chamber music, and perhaps something devoted to the enormous influence he has had in reviving neglected Baltic and Eastern European repertory.
