Buying groceries, tracking our health, finding a date: whatever we want to do, odds are that we can now do it online. But few of us ask how all these digital products are designed, or why. It's time we change that. Many of the services we rely on are full of oversights, biases, and downright ethical nightmares. Chatbots that harass women. Signup forms that fail anyone who's not straight. Social media sites that send peppy messages about dead relatives. Algorithms that put more black people behind bars.

The four tracks on this session provide listeners with a chance to hear two of the last Messengers units. Half the cuts were done at Sweet Basils in 1985 with a three-horn frontline of alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, tenor saxophonist Jean Toussaint, and trumpeter Terence Blanchard, plus bassist Lonnie Plaxico and pianist Mulgrew Miller. The others were recorded in a New York studio in 1987 with another three-horn group of alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett, tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson, and trumpeter Philip Harper, plus pianist Benny Green and bassist Peter Washington. Jackson, Garrett, and Harper display more fire and bite than their counterparts, and although there is nothing technically wrong with what the other group offers, it is just not as substantial, intense, or creative. While this is not a great Messengers release, it is certainly worth having.

For all its intellect and adrenaline, metal is not generally known for being music’s most emotionally moving genre. While many prog fans would certainly point to Anathema and Pain of Salvation as prime examples of bands who know how to balance the rapturous with the raucous, those with even a passing familiarity with their output would note that these two European ensembles do so while straying fairly far from their metal roots. Many metal devotees would, however, surely point to two unapologetically metal bands who reliably inspire both manic headbanging and cathartic weeping – Fates Warning and Redemption – and it doesn’t take a metal scholar to note that these two American bands have a very important trait in common.

Into the Great Wide Open is the eighth studio album by American rock band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, released in July 1991. The album was the band's last with MCA Records. The album was the second Petty produced with Jeff Lynne after the success of Full Moon Fever. The first single, "Learning to Fly", became the band's joint longest-running No. 1 single (along with "The Waiting" from 1981's Hard Promises) on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, spending six weeks at the top spot. The second single, "Out in the Cold", also made No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock chart, albeit for two weeks.
