The Classical Jazz Quartet Kenny Barron on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Stefon Harris on vibraphone and marimba, and Lewis Nash on drums seems to begin where the Modern Jazz Quartet of the 1950s left off, right down to the CJQ initials that seem to evoke memories of the earlier group. Bach was the staple of the classical-music treatments the MJQ released.

Tenor-saxophonist Eddie Harris's third album features him exploring 11 themes from Henry Mancini's score for Breakfast At Tiffany 's. Harris stretches out the most on "Moon River" and the title cut but he does justice to the nine lesser-known themes. This long out-of-print LP holds one's interest throughout and, although Harris comes up with plenty of fresh ideas, he also never leaves the melody far behind. His unlisted backup group is a septet that includes trombonist Joe Avant, vibraphonist Charles Stepney, pianist Willie Pickens and guitarist Joe Diorio. A fine (if obscure) outing. –Scott Yanow

"Portrait in Jazz" (Riverside RLP12-315) was Bill Evans’ third album as a leader, following New Jazz Conceptions (1956) and Everybody Digs Bill Evans (1958). It was also Evans’ first LP with the talented bassist Scott LaFaro, who would tragically die in a car crash in 1961. This CD is completed by a different take of “Autumn Leaves”, which was issued on the Mono version of the LP, as well as by the original version of “Blue in Green”, recorded by Bill Evans with Miles Davis for the classic album "Kind of Blue".
