Although Impressionism suits the flute very well, the greatest French masters did not compose sonatas for the instrument. On the fourth disc of the seven-volume series their followers, of various nationalities, will compensate for their absence, introducing the wide palette of colors of the pair of instruments. Ravel’s youthful sonata was composed for the violin but it can effectively be performed on the flute.

Finnish composer and pianist Selim Palmgren (1878-1951) was a very successful concert pianist throughout Finland and Scandinavian. He is sometimes known as the Nordic Chopin. Throughout his career, Palmgren wrote a great deal of piano music. In fact, his extant catalog includes 300 individual piano works and five piano concertos. This release includes the first three of Palmgrens piano concertos, along with seven short pieces for violin and piano. Pianist Henri Sigfridsson is the star of this album, along with violinist Jan Soderblom.

Power Quest was conceived in March 2001 by keyboardist Williams, who had recently departed London-based power metal band DragonHeart (later called DragonForce).

They were both just twenty years young and always good for a musical laugh when they composed the serenades we have recorded on this CD. One of them, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, wrote his “Haffner Serenade” KV 250 for Sigmund Haffner d. J., who had commissioned him with a “Braut Musick” for his sister Marie Elisabeth's wedding with Franz Xaver Anton Späth from Salzburg. The other one, Othmar Schoeck, 130 years later humorously reverberated this genre, which had peaked in Mozart’s works composed from 1769 until 1779.

The bulk of La mer was composed during a visit to Burgundy – a long way from the nearest sea – although the work was completed in the English seaside town of Eastbourne.
