Taking philosophical principles as a point of departure, this book provides essential distinctions for thinking through the history and systems of Western psychology. In line with the aims of the American Psychological Association’s Society for the History of Psychology, this book is concisely designed to help readers navigate through the length and complexity found in history of psychology textbooks. Neither a history textbook, seeking to maximize inclusion of historical content, nor a doxography, this book presents philosophical and historically-based principles and distinctions for organizing and thinking through the diversity, complexity, and history of systems constituting contemporary Western psychology.

This book explores how culture and tradition have impacted the tendency for African women to opt for entrepreneurship. The first section presents literature on the concept of entrepreneurship and introduces traditional African women entrepreneurs—the first-generation, culture-driven entrepreneurs, driven by the need to alleviate poverty within the family.

In the mid-1870s, the experimental therapy of lamb blood transfusion spread like an epidemic across Europe and the USA. Doctors tried to use it as a cure for tuberculosis, pellagra, and anemia; proposed it as a means to reanimate seemingly dead soldiers on the battlefield. It was a contested therapy because it meant crossing boundaries and challenging taboos.

This book provides a critical perspective on several interconnected themes that relate to the implementation of both domestic and international environmental standards. What are the direct and indirect costs and benefits of these standards? What is the political economy structure that governs their implementation? Do environmental standards affect individuals and economic sectors in different ways? How do environmental standards interact with trade patterns in an ever-globalised world?

These are my lecture notes from CS681: Design and Analysis of Algo­ rithms, a one-semester graduate course I taught at Cornell for three consec­ utive fall semesters from '88 to '90. The course serves a dual purpose: to cover core material in algorithms for graduate students in computer science preparing for their PhD qualifying exams, and to introduce theory students to some advanced topics in the design and analysis of algorithms.
