Green Linnet 20th Anniversary Collection is a double-disc collection featuring 38 tracks from the Celtic music insitution. Every one of the label's biggest artists – including Silly Wizard, Altan, Wolfstone, the Bothy Band, John Williams, Tannahill Weavers – is on the collection, giving a good representation of not only the label, but the state of Celtic music of the '70s, '80s, and '90s. It's an excellent retrospective.

The new album HEATHER DOWN THE MOOR (Gael Linn) from Gatehouse is receiving rave reviews and the group features on the playlists of stations across these islands. Individually, these musicians are superb but when they combine as Gatehouse, they are outstanding! Their music ranges from the light cadence of dance music to barnstormers which remind one of The Bothy Band. A central feature of the album is the beautiful singing of Rachel Garvey whose wide repertoire of songs in Irish and in English are given sympathetic and understated accompaniment by the group. The new tune compositions from the group's fiddler John McEvoy fit seamlessly into the musical style of North Connacht.

There are Celtic Music specialty radio shows and on-demand audio channels. Celtic Music CDs are sold in health food and yoga stores. We know it when we hear it. Right? So, what is it? There’s a loose definition (or maybe tacit agreement) that Celtic Music is found in those European cultures where the Celtic tribes invaded. Aside from Ireland and Scotland, Wales qualifies, as does Brittany, the Galician part of Spain, the Isle of Man.

There’s a loose definition (or maybe tacit agreement) that Celtic Music is found in those European cultures where the Celtic tribes invaded. Aside from Ireland and Scotland, Wales qualifies, as does Brittany, the Galician part of Spain, the Isle of Man. If we focus just on the Gaelic language group and fine tune it to just Scotland and Ireland, we really know what we are hearing, right? Do we? While there is plentiful cross-pollination between these two nations and an ancient shared heritage, they are not the same place, and their music is not a single common recipe using slightly different ingredients. Irish stew is not haggis. There are differences grand and small, subtle and great.

There's an ever-increasing amount of Celtic material available, ranging from tunes straight from the pubs of Dublin to vaguely Irish-sounding new age material. This is one of the more otherworldly combinations, a musical stew combining authentic Celtic instrumentation alongside modern instruments, all banded together in a set of easily accessible instrumentals. There's even a cover of Sting's pop hit "Fields of Gold." But don't be fooled – just because the music is accessible doesn't mean it is pabulum. This is engaging, listenable music that conveys a Celtic feel as much as discs by Clannad, the Bothy Band, or more traditional Irish groups.

Essential: a masterpiece of prog-folk music
It is almost impossible to provide an objective review of one of the theme tunes of my childhood. This accompanied Thomas Kinsella and Louis le Brocquy's (I'm sure I misspelled that) fabulous transaltion& brush drawings of the The Tain (which was compulsory study at school).

Following the kaleidoscopic adventure of Villagers’ fifth album Fever Dreams, award-winning Dublin singer-songwriter-instrumentalist-dramatist Conor O’Brien returns with the intimate inventory, That Golden Time. After the band-centred sessions of its predecessor, That Golden Time’s solo-centric core was not forced on O’Brien by lockdown. “For me, That Golden Time has an internalised voice, so much so that I almost found it impossible to let anyone else in,” he says. “It’s probably the most vulnerable album I’ve made. I played and recorded everything in my apartment, and finally, towards the end, invited people in.” Invites went out to, among others, Irish legend Dónal Lunny [Planxty, The Bothy Band] on bouzouki, American songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick on violin, and a group of players that O’Brien had first seen performing in a tribute to one of his great loves, Italian composer Ennio Morricone, who added soprano vocal, viola and cello.

Thugamar fein an samhradh linn has a haunting melody which has never left me. To hear it in We Bring the summer with us was moving.
