As the centenaries of various events of the First World War are being commemorated, we are reminded of the great battles and the large-scale suffering. To imagine what day-to-day life may have been like in the trenches in Flanders is more difficult, however, 100 years later and with no living survivors of the war to bear witness. Poems and paintings can give us some idea – but, as this disc from Steven Isserlis proves, so can music! The main, more conventional section of the programme is a selection of cello works composed around the time of the war, by composers from three of the countries involved in it: France, Britain and Austria.

Jonny Teupenonny Teupen was a German harpist and composer of modern jazz and easy listening. Teupen studied with Max Saal at the Academic University of Music Berlin. After stints at the Theater des Volkes and the State Opera Unter den Linden, he moved to the NWDR in 1949, where he became solo harpist of what is now the WDR Rundfunkorchester Köln, of which he was a member until 1985. In addition, he could also be heard in WDR productions with Paul Kuhn and Helmut Zacharias. The musical short film “Young Man with a Harp” was built around him in 1961. He recorded several jazz-oriented albums under his own name (especially for MPS) and also composed for the film (Mini Killers, 1969). In the 1960s and early 1970s he was known in Germany as "Harpist No. 1". He also worked under the pseudonym Jean-Pierre Valmer.

The Twelfth Symphony forms an exception in Allan Pettersson’s output. When he agreed to compose a work for the 500th anniversary of Uppsala University, it was one of the few commissions that he ever accepted. Having written purely orchestral scores for the past 30 years, he decided to incorporate a choir and a text. Pablo Neruda had received the Nobel Prize in 1971, and acknowledging the poet’s ‘deeply felt compassion for the outcasts of society’, Pettersson selected nine poems from the huge collection Canto general for his new work.
