The late-'60s film starring Marianne Faithfull and Alain Delon has a cult reputation, if only because it's one of Faithfull's few film appearances (and has rarely been seen, especially in the U.S.). The soundtrack has enough of a groovy late-'60s period feel to merit a cult reputation of its own, with its bordering-on-bizarre mix of solid '60s Hammond organ grooves, soothing quasi-classical interludes, lush '60s Europop along the lines of the theme from A Man and a Woman, and brief flashes of psychedelia and avant-gardisms. (Faithfull fans be cautioned: Marianne does not sing on the soundtrack at all.) The recurring motifs are quite insinuating, and treated with a number of imaginative arrangements, making this a pretty interesting find for fans of '60s Euro easy listening/pop hybrids, even if they're not interested in having a souvenir of the film. The CD reissue does the job right by adding good liner notes and three bonus cuts by vocalists Mireille Mathieu and Cleo Laine, who recorded these tracks after Les Reed added lyrics to three instrumental pieces from the film.

The Girl on a Motorcycle or better yet, Naked Under Leather (as the film was called in France), was a British / French film directed in 1968 by Jack Cardiff. The film starred Marianne Faithfull and was due to air at Cannes but due to the May 68 riots it never did. The plot is fairly simple: A woman leaves her husband and zips away on her motorcycle to be with her lover.

British singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull achieved huge popularity in the 1960s following the release of her hit cover of The Rolling Stones As Tears Go By . She then became one of the lead female artists during the British Invasion in the United States. Faithfull began her career in 1964 after attending a Rolling Stones party where she was discovered by the Stones then manager Andrew Loog Oldham, and from 1966 to 1970 she had a highly publicised romantic relationship with Mick Jagger. Her popularity was further enhanced by her film roles, such as I'll Never Forget What's 'isname (1967), The Girl on a Motorcycle (1968), and Hamlet (1969). However, in the 1970s her popularity was overshadowed by personal problems, during which time she was anorexic, alcoholic and a heroin addict.

Psychedelic Rock, Proto-Punk

Very good Pleasure Island 1996 Pink Fairies reunion effort, this title was released by drummer Twink's own label, Twink Records of a limited edition of 1,000 copies. So, obviously 'Pleasure Island' is often hard to find. Don't think it's ever been reissued after that. Looks like 'Pleasure…' has just just two players, of Twink-drums and Paul Rudolph-bass&vocalist. Couldn't tell you if anyone else appeared on this CD or not. 'Pleasure…' is some fine psych/raw punk with an edge to it. "As Above,So Below" is basic well played '70's rock and roll revived. I found "Man With A Golden Gun" to be somewhat refreshing and "Jungle Drums" shows you, just what Twink is truly capable of. For a true mind-blower,put on the headphones to fully experience the 32-minute "Cargoe In Jamaica".

Garage / Psychedelic Rock

One of the most colorful characters in the annals of rock & roll, Kim Fowley was, over the course of his decades-long career, a true jack-of-all-trades: singer, songwriter, producer, manager, disc jockey, promoter, and published poet. He was also the catalyst behind much of the pop music to emerge from the Los Angeles area during the 1960s and '70s, guiding several of his associates and protégés to fame and fortune, while remaining himself a shadowy cult figure well outside the margins of the mainstream…
