Roberto, a shy law student in Rome, meets Bruno, a forty-year-old exuberant, capricious man, who takes him for a drive through the Roman and Tuscany countries in the summer of 1962. They will spend two days together, meet both Roberto's and Bruno's family. The time Roberto spends with Bruno is a hilarious, but sometimes emotionally merciless accelerated maturization process. While Bruno's easy going "l'usage du monde" and societal success attract Roberto's great admiration, he also slowly realizes Bruno's hollowness, superficiality and unhappiness.

Peter Sellers starts out with one role and ends up with three in The Dock Brief (U.S. title Trial and Error), a satirical comedy based on the television play by John Mortimer. Sellers' principal role is as an incompetent barrister assigned to defend a wife murderer (Richard Attenborough). The barrister's monumental stupidity threatens to bollix the case before it begins, and indeed his client is found guilty. But ignorance is bliss in this instance; the guilty verdict is thrown out because the court feels that Sellers' defense was worthless! The multiple-role bit occurs in a dream sequence, wherein both Sellers and his costar Richard Attenborough assume numerous characterizations. This was the sort of stunting revered by Peter Sellers' many American fans, and detested by the actor's innumerable British detractors.

After a lavish dinner party, the guests find themselves mysteriously unable to leave the room…

Massie plays a young man sentenced to a year's prison term for slugging a man in a jealous fight over his girl friend. He is assigned kitchen duties and soon fits into the highly structured routines of the prisoners. This includes swiping food from the kitchen to trade with men from other areas. When a cellmate is caught bringing a knife out of the kitchen, Massie takes the blame in order to allow his mate to be set free in a month after a long stay. Script and direction take a personable view of prison life, showing the prisoners as individuals. Though the picture is filled with humorous moments, underneath is the continual feeling of the degradation and humiliation the prisoners must endure.
