"Playin' Up a Storm" is the 2nd studio album by the Gregg Allman Band, released in 1977 on Capricorn Records. It peaked at #42 on the Billboard 200. "Playin' Up a Storm" came after the breakup of the Allman Brothers Band in 1976. During this time, Allman had moved to Hollywood to live with his then-wife Cher. The album was produced by Lenny Waronker, and in his memoir, My Cross to Bear, Allman remembered that Waronker was frustrated with his unpunctuality in regards to studio time. The album was released in May 1977, on Capricorn Records. Allman claimed that Phil Walden, owner of Capricorn, was incensed over his move to the West Coast to live with Cher, and only printed 50,000 copies of the LP.

The Allman Brothers Band featured on the penultimate episode in the very first season of MTV Unplugged, and were precisely the kind of act that producers Robert Small, Jim Burns and Jules Shear had in mind when creating the show. Taking place on the 19th of November 1990, the performance on Unplugged came just over a year into the Allmans reunion, the group having parted company in the early 80s. Reformed around guitarist Warren Haynes, from Dickey Betts solo outfit, and bassist Allen Woody, the band was enjoying something of a renaissance, brought on by both a late 80s nostalgia for the classic rock acts of the 60s and 70s as well as the chart success of their career-retrospective box-set, Dreams. In the summer of1990, the Allmans released their ninth studio album, and first for nearly a decade, Seven Turns; it confirmed that the Allman Brothers Band was back. And so the MTV performance arrived while the Allman s were riding high as a rehabilitated band touring a successful album.

The Gregg Allman Tour is the first live album by Gregg Allman, released in 1974. It was recorded at Carnegie Hall and Capitol Theatre. It peaked at number 50 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts in 1974. It was originally released as a double LP. Several of its members had already backed Gregg Allman on his debut album the previous year.

Spanning four discs and 55 tracks, Dreams is one of those rare box sets that tells a story while delivering the definitive word on its subject. Its success has a lot to do with its status as Polygram/Bill Levinson's sequel to the acclaimed hit Crossroads, which summarized Eric Clapton's winding career perfectly. They follow the same approach here, gathering pre-Allman Brothers Band recordings from the clan, including cuts by the Allman Joys, selecting the hits from the classic years, and adding stray cuts by solo projects to the mix. It's a smart move and it results in a terrific box that truly offers the definitive word on one of the longest-running dramas in Southern rock. Yes, the Allmans reunited rather successfully after this box, so none of that material is here, but it's not missed – this is the story of the classic band.
