Since youth was youth and fashion was fashion, the dance floors of the Western world have periodically been swept by dance rages. Prior to World War I, Irene and Vernon Castle popularized a variety of dances, notably the Fox Trot and a number of animal dances. The 1920s saw huge popularity for the Charleston, Blackbottom, and Lindy, and in the late 1930s the rage began for wild jitterbugging to swing bands. But none of these dance crazes could match the early 1960s for their sheer variety of dance fads: there was a veritable explosion of all kinds of rock n roll and rhythm and blues dances and dance records, all emerging out of the popularity of the Twist. This survey covers some of the most distinctive and entertaining dances of that era up to the dance-crazed peak of 1962. A life begun on February 26, 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas, and sparse with themes as Imperial as redemption, pain, love and death. A career engaged in the company of guitarist Luther Perkins and bassist Marshall Grant, aka The Tennessee Two. In 1954, the trio crossed the road of the great producer Sam Philips, "discoverer" of a certain Elvis Presley.

This two-hour-plus compilation of the first five years of the history of John Mayall and his band the Bluesbreakers in their many permutations covers all the expected bases and then some. Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Taylor are all represented, but so are Bernie Watson and Roger Dean, both of whom preceded Clapton in the guitarist's spot in the band. What's more, they're not bad; they may not have been the assertive soloist that Clapton came to embody, but Dean plays a pretty hot solo on "Crocodile Walk," which was good enough to make the A-side of a single in 1965. Moreover, there was more to any of the Mayall bands than their guitarists, and Mayall's blues harmonica is showcased throughout, on tracks such as "Crawling Up a Hill" and "Blues City Shakedown."
