Karol Anbild was born in Katowice on February 16, 1925, into a miner’s family. His father, an amateur musician and a member of Silesian brass bands, was his first teacher of music. Karol attended a primary school in Piotrowice until 1938, but the outbreak of World War Two deprived him of the opportunity to receive a solid education, including in music. As a boy of 15, he was deported to Schweidnitz as a forced farm labourer. Having escaped from there, he enrolled at the secondary music school in Katowice in order to avoid another forced labour deportation. In 1943, however, he had to suspend his education again. Mobilized into the German army, he was sent to France, from where he escaped after the invasion of the allied forces. He joined the Polish Armed Forces in the West and was posted to Scotland. It was there that he started his artistic activity, giving concerts for soldiers with his own ensemble.
