The Aloof formed in 1990 and forged a reputation as one of the hardest working bands around. While other acts incorporated an electronica into a general rock sound in the early ‘90s, The Aloof were always a pioneering electronic act. Touring alongside the likes of Massive Attack and Leftfield, they released three albums with Warner’s EastWest label: Cover The Crime (1994), Sinking (1996) and Seeking Pleasure (1998). After parting ways with Warner, they were in charge of their own destiny, and formed their own ‘Screaming Target’ label as they set about making a new record.

YANG Jing was born in China at a time when the so-called Cultural Revolution, which lasted from 1966 to 1976, had a major impact on her childhood. This wiped out all traditional, bourgeois culture to an extent that we can hardly believe even today. Mao's wife Jiang Qing postulated that only proletarian art and literature was acceptable, which for her only really began in 1963, with everything created before that being regarded as reprehensible and decadent. As one of the four leading figures of the Cultural Revolution, which was later dubbed the Gang of Four, she was largely responsible for the attempt to erase China's cultural heritage. Only so-called model plays, six Peking operas and two ballets, newly written for the purpose of public education, were permitted.

Gustav Mahler never heard Das Lied von der Erde, his penultimate completed work, nor the Ninth Symphony, which followed it closely. He was probably working on them more or less simultaneously. Despite his state of health, he managed not only to complete the full score of Das Lied, but also to prepare a version with piano accompaniment in place of the orchestra. There is however a third version, started by Arnold Schönberg - who saw Mahler as his mentor - in 1920, and scored for a chamber orchestra. This release features the European Chamber Soloists under Nicol Matt, with soloists Anna Haase (mezzo-soprano) and Daniel Sans (tenor).

As core members of the ensemble Wigmore Soloists, Michael Collins, Isabelle van Keulen and Michael McHale present four works for clarinet trio composed over a period of some 130 years. Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio was long believed to have been composed during a game of bowling. The writing is reminiscent of a conversation between three friends in which contrasts are not excluded: we hear affection, divergences and even disagreements. This atmosphere of friendly, playful, and sometimes very intimate exchange also pervades Schumann’s Märchenerzählungen (Fairy Tales).
