This is a rare 1963 folk album from the Johnson Boys, named after the three musicians' favourite folk ballad (included here). Not to be confused with another bluegrass group called the Johnson Mountain Boys who came along a decade later. This album is subtitled The 1963 Campus Folk Favorites, as the liner notes state, this was intended to be "the new music of the young adults" of the era.

The Palm Beach Band Boys was studio recording group ostensibly assembled by RCA Victor to capitalize on the success of The New Vaudeville Band's hit single, "Winchester Cathedral". They performed in a style for which the New Vaudeville Band's promoters coined the term, newstalgia, a kind of faux 1920s/1930s sound, featuring nasal vocals, banjo, brass, electric guitar, rock drums, and bassoon. According to a December 1966 TIME article, the vocalist is actually "an RCA executive who croons while holding his nose". Their first LP, "Winchester Cathedral", recorded in RCA Victor's Studios A and B in New York City was released in 1966. It featured arrangements by Billy Mure and was produced by Danny Davis.

Maybe it was youthful exuberance or perhaps it was the fact that the band itself was not pulling all the strings, Three Imaginary Boys is not only a very strong debut, but a near oddity (it's an admittedly "catchy" record) in the Cure catalog. More poppy and representative of the times than any other album during their long career, Three Imaginary Boys is a semi-detached bit of late-'70s English pop-punk. Angular and lyrically abstract, it's strong points are in its utter simplicity. There are no dirges here, no long suites, just short bursts of energy and a rather strange cover of Hendrix's "Foxy Lady." For some, this is the last good Cure record, many fans of this album being in no way prepared for the sparse emptiness and gloom that would be the cornerstone of future releases…

In the '70s, harmonica man Billy Branch was one of the young upstarts helping to keep the Chicago blues sound alive; in the 21st century, he's matured into one of the Windy City's most venerable blues talents, and as a musician and educator, Branch has spread the word about the blues across the country and around the world. Branch has led the Sons of Blues, his backing band, since the mid-'70s, and despite numerous personnel changes, the SOBs have never wavered in their dedication to pure, unadulterated Chicago blues.

Two CDs devoted to the Springfields is probably a bit much for casual fans. This set could likely have been trimmed to one 70-minute CD, leaving out "Silver Dollar," "Row Row Row" and some of the other lesser material from their first album, although it is strange in an enlightening way to hear Dusty singing the latter, a pre-World War I standard more suited to the likes of Ruth Etting. What's good is that none of the high spots are left out, including "Allentown Jail," the ethereal "Far Away Place," "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" (natch), the delightful "Little Boat" (the best of their international numbers), and the gorgeous, near-British beat style "Come On Home," where Dusty starts to show off some of the soulfulness that would later identify her voice. The notes are well detailed, and the mastering is flawless.

A two-part documentary following Tony as he visits the Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire - the inspiration behind Channel 4 drama The Mill - to learn about the experiences of Britain's factory workers who drove the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries. As the looms roar and the air fills with dust (the mill, now run by the National Trust, is fully operational), Robinson is set to work, crawling beneath the machinery to pick up bits of fluffy cotton. This was a job done by children, often as young as seven, who worked 12-hour days.
