The Kraken Consort was born from the imagination of three musicians, friends and colleagues, whose horizons extend well beyond the baroque repertoire which allowed them to meet: Bruno Helstroffer, a musician whose versatility and freedom make him a of the most requested theorbists of the moment; two lyrical artists accustomed to opera stages around the world: Robert Getchell, a native of the United States, of Irish-Scottish origins, seasoned in the traditional repertoires of Celtic culture; and Chantal Santon Jeffery, a sought-after interpreter of 17th and 18th century English-language repertoires.

The Kraken Consort was born in 2021 from the imagination of three musicians, friends and colleagues: theorbist Bruno Helstroffer, soprano Chantal Santon Jeffery and tenor Robert Getchell, a Celtic music enthusiast. They share a taste for traditional oral and improvised music, and were keen to team up with instrumentalists with in-depth experience of traditional music: Ronan Pellen (cistre), Brewen Favrau (piper), Sylvain Barou (flute), David Lombardi (violin) and Laurène Durantel (double bass). For their debut album, Kraken Consort revisit the Irish and Scottish musical tradition.

Ethel Smyth (1858-1944), Britain's greatest female composer, wrote six operas. The Boatswain's Mate, composed in Egypt in 1913-14, and first performed in 1916, was far and away the most popular of them, and between the wars, was often performed. It is a wonderfully tuneful and funny work, the most successful of all the British operas of the period, using folk music to evoke English rural life. Smyth was a close friend of Emmeline Pankhurst. She had been strongly involved with the suffragette movement immediately before she composed The Boatswain's Mate, and it's generally considered her most feminist opera (the overture quotes 'The March of the Women', her famous suffragette song). Smyth wrote her own libretto, adapting a story and play by W. W. Jacobs.

23 Tracks of Remastered Early Singles, Demos, and Live Recordings with 28-Page Full Color Booklet. What we have here are home and field recordings of The dB's. Most of these tracks predate the release of Stands For deciBels by two to three years and were the basis of the signing of the band to Albion Records (UK) in 1980. Some songs are being released to the public for the first time in this package.
Now, almost thirty years after a number of these tracks first saw the light of day on Rhino Records, we find ourselves in the position of releasing the earliest of these selections from our archives to a whole new audience. The live recordings were found after months of Chris sifting through a trove of ancient cassettes, and we are glad to be able to include these key songs from those early years.
