The Lays of Marie de France (Mingling Voices) by David R. Slavitt
English | Nov. 14, 2013 | ISBN: 1927356350 | 160 Pages | PDF | 1 MB

The twelve “lays” of Marie de France, the earliest known French woman poet, are here presented in sprightly English verse by poet and translator David R. Slavitt. Traditional Breton folktales were the raw material for Marie de France’s series of lively but profound considerations of love, life, death, fidelity and betrayal, and luck and fate.

The Logic of Language: A Semiotic Study of Speech  eBooks & eLearning

The Logic of Language: A Semiotic Study of Speech

The Logic of Language: A Semiotic Study of Speech by Michael Shapiro
English | PDF | 2022 | 347 Pages | ISBN : 3031066111 | 4.7 MB

This book serves as a basis for the exploration of language in a more systematic way. The main impetus for writing this book derives from the fact that linguistics and semiotics are two fields of study that need to be brought together under one compass because language is what is known as the “passkey semiotic,” i.e. the system of signs that underlies all other sign systems owing to its foundational status. Due to the current balkanization of linguistics as an academic discipline, the academic study of language structure rarely if ever incorporates the insights of semiotics and semioticians when presenting its material.

In an age when church attendance in England was flourishing, Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810–1876) was one of the foremost composers and organists of his day. Taking advantage of new developments in instrument building, Wesley was able to push the boundaries of English church music in a new direction, encompassing a more ambitious, even operatic style. In this recording – the first to have been made using an organ similar in design to his own – Wesley’s music is brought to vibrant life by the young professional singers of Holy Sepulchre under conductor Toby Ward.

The Mystery Of The Bulgarian Voices released their first album of new studio recordings in over two decades. Better known to many as Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares (Grammy winner for “Best Traditional Folk Recording”), ‘BooCheeMish’ sees the esteemed Bulgarian choir performing together with erstwhile 4AD Records label mate Lisa Gerrard (co-founder of the duo Dead Can Dance) on several tracks, thereby uniting two of the most distinctive vocal acts working in music. Gerrard, who is also well known for her movie soundtrack work on films such as ‘Gladiator’ and ’The Insider’, has often spoken about the influence the choir exerted on her singing technique when she discovered their music in the early 1980’s.

Jan Ladislav Dussek was perhaps Europe's greatest pianist until Beethoven came along, and much of his music involves the piano. He wrote works in many genres, however, including some substantial choral music at the end of his life that, in places, looked forward to Schubert. Consider this Messe Solemnelle in G major, an hourlong work that receives not only its world premiere recording but possibly its first performance in any form; it was discovered by Academy of Ancient Music director Richard Egarr in a Florence library. Physical CD buyers will get a weighty scholarly apparatus, but even online listeners will find an enjoyable work that could easily find its way into the choral repertory.

All the music heard on this album was composed, arranged & scientifically mutilated by Mother Superior Frank Zappa. The content of this CD is the same as the 1969 released compilation 'Mothermania - The Best Of The Mothers Of Invention" except the order of tracks are different. All tracks compiled from original vinyl counterparts. Brilliant Zappa and The Mothers CD and a must for any collector.

EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue & Log) ~ 266 Mb | Total time: 61:10 | Scans included
Classical | Label: Virgin Veritas | # 5 45365 2 | Recorded: 1999

After a fine Handel recital CD, not to mention taking part in a dozen other major recordings, countertenor David Daniels has hit the jackpot. This fascinating, handsomely recorded CD offers us arias from Mitridate and Ascanio in Alba, and a concert aria by Mozart (the only one he composed for male alto), as well as some Handel and Gluck arias. With them, Daniels takes us through every quality a classically trained singer should have and comes through with flying colors. The arias are about vengeance, sorrow, love–the usual–but within baroque strictures that means that some require lush, limpid singing, others ferocious coloratura and exclamatory heft, and some all of these.

Something of a Soul supergroup, the FOL comprised Northern Soul hero Chuck 'I'm a Lover' Carter, former Flamingo Keith Williams and Tyrone Davis' sister Jean. Their recordings are much prized by Southern Soul aficionados. Just the Facts contains both of the group's original Kayvette albums, which include all of their single A-sides, plus a selection of non album B-sides and alternative versions their complete recordings in fact. Southbound.
