When the Lemon Twigs' 2016 debut Do Hollywood arrived, it sounded like a weird dream where an even more over-the-top Sparks covered Harry Nilsson. If the band sounded like they were raised on musical theater and power pop, it's because they were, with brothers Brian and Michael D’Addario born to '70s multi-instrumentalist/songwriter father Ronnie D'Addario and musician mother Susan Hall, who helped them realize their young dreams as child actors.

The Lemon Twigs emerged in 2016 with their debut LP, Do Hollywood, which was praised by Rolling Stone for its toting hooky songs that stand out for their intricate arrangements and delectable melodies and NPR Music who mused, like listening to music from a time that never was, a baroque rock romp. Their second album, Go To School is their most ambitious work yet; a conceptual musical, conceived by brothers Brian and Michael D Addario, which tells a heartbreaking coming of age story of Shane, a pure of heart chimpanzee raised as a human boy as he comes to terms with the obstacles of life. Todd Rundgren and their real-life mother Susan Hall play Shane s parents. The album also features contributions from Jody Stephens (Big Star), Natalie Mering (Weyes Blood) and their father Ronnie D Addario.

Long Island’s D’Addario brothers craft another lush, ambitious patchwork of their favorite sounds of the ’60s and ’70s. On Brothers of Destruction, they’re both gorgeously simple (“Beautiful”) and dizzyingly complex “Night Song” sets the tone for its erratic stumble through baroque pop, dark psychedelia, and prog rock with the opening line “I think I went a little nuts at the grocery store.” Most satisfyingly, “Why Didn’t You Say That?” and “Light and Love” suggest the duo are increasingly willing to let their terrific melodies play out before stuffing them down multiple wormholes.

The Lemon Pipers were somewhat of an anomaly in the 1960s bubblegum community because the group actually had creative aspirations. Unfortunately, their high-water mark came with their first single, the infectious "Green Tambourine" (written by the team of Paul Leka and Shelley Pinz), which hit the number one spot on the pop charts in 1968. The follow-up singles (also written by Leka and Pinz) "Rice Is Nice" and "Jelly Jungle" added in interesting orchestrated Baroque pop elements, but ultimately failed to attract much attention. This compilation from Camden Records includes the Lemon Pipers' only two albums, Green Tambourine and Jungle Marmalade…

The Lemon Pipers' Golden Classics is a mid-priced collection spotlighting several of the bubblegum band's late-'60 tracks, including "Rice Is Nice," "Jelly Jungle (Of Orange Marmalade)," and their number one hit from 1967, "Green Tambourine." This Collectables compilation alongside Buddah's Best of the Lemon Pipers: Green Tambourine are just about equal in sound quality and definitive track listing.

Unlike the majority of bubblegum bands, the Lemon Pipers' albums are actually quite good, not least because they were one of the few bubblegum bands who were a proper band with their own songwriters (although outside writer/producers did provide the two hits, the inescapable "Green Tambourine" and the actually even better "Rice Is Nice," a sweet, harp-laden depiction of a wedding day). Even the album tracks are pretty groovy, like the Cat Stevens-like character sketches "Shoeshine Boy" and "The Shoemaker of Leatherwood Square," which effectively use trippy string sections and playful harmonies…

Psychedelic Pop, Bubblegum

2008 collection from the undisputed kings of Bubblegum Psych. Love Beads And Meditation combines their two albums, Green Tambourine (1967) and Jungle Marmalade (1968), which mashed up Soft Pop Bubblegum gems with the band's growling Rock tendencies and confused the hell out of everybody. The song 'Green Tambourine' was a massive hit everywhere and remains a dyed-in-the-wool classic. 'Rice Is Nice', 'Jelly Jungle', those sweet and soft hits just kept coming. But behind the grins of Ohio's happy hippie hit makers was a down and dirty Psychedelic Rock band, a caged beast straining to get out. Just listen to the likes of 'Fifty Year Void', 'No Help From Me' and the eardrum-frying 'Through With You' for proof.
